Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Most commonly used type heat transfer equipment in
chemical and allied industries.

Advantages:
The configuration gives a large surface area in a small

volume. Good mechanical layout: a good shape for pressure operation. Uses well established fabrication techniques. Can be constructed from a wide range of materials. Can be easily cleaned. Well established design procedure.

Applications
Used as a heater, cooler, reboiler and condenser Application in mechanical, metallurgical and electrical
industries

Widely used in chemical industries: refineries,

petrochemicals, dyes & intermediates, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals, natural gas processing and sewage treatment.

Also used for space heating, refrigeration and airconditioning.

Heat Exchanger Standards and Codes

British Standards BS-3274.

TEMA Standards are universally used.

TEMA standards cover following classes of exchangers
Class R- Designates sever requirements of petroleum
and other related processing application. Class C- Moderate requirements of commercial and general process application. Class B- Specifies design and fabrication for chemical process services.

Design Methods of Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

Kern Method
Does not take into account bypass and leakage streams. Simple to apply and accurate enough for preliminary design
calculation. Restricted to a fixed baffle cut.

Bell Method
Most widely used. Takes into account: Leakage through the gaps between tubes and baffles and
baffles and shell.

Bypass of flow around the gap between tube bundle and shell.

Kern Method
Step 1: From the inlet and outlet temperature and flowrate, calculate heat load,
mass flowrate of other fluid. Calculate LMTD and introducing the correction factor calculate corrected LMTD.

Step 2: Assuming overall HTC estimate the area value From one tube area calculate total number of tubes From pitch constant calculate bundle diameter and shell inside
diameter.

Step 3:

From mass flowrate calculate velocity on both side. Calculate Reynolds's, Prandlt and Nusselt number From that calculate overall HTC From velocity calculate pressure drop on both side.

Bell Delaware Method

All tube side data are taken from Kern Method. This method is not recommended when the by-pass flow area is greater than
30% of the cross-flow area, unless sealing strips are used.

The shell-side heat transfer coefficient is given by:

hs= hocFnFwFbFL

where hoc= heat transfer coefficient calculated for cross-flow over an ideal
tube bank, no leakage or bypassing.

Fn= correction factor to allow for the effect of the number of vertical tube rows,
Fw= window effect correction factor, Fb= bypass stream correction factor, FL= leakage correction factor. The total correction will vary from 0.6 for a poorly designed exchanger with
large clear- ances to 0.9 for a well-designed exchanger.

Different Excel Function used in Design

Vlookup Function
Searches for a value in the leftmost column of a table, and then returns a value
in the same row from a column you specify in the table. Your comparison values are located in a column to the left of the data you want to find.

Hlookup Function
Searches for a value in the top row of a table or an array of values, and then
returns a value in the same column from a row you specify in the table or array. . Your comparison values are located in a column to the down of the data you want to find.

If Function Returns one value if a condition you specify evaluates to TRUE and another
value if it evaluates to FALSE.

Round Function

Rounds a number to a specified number of digits.

Different Excel Function used in Design

Data validation
Setting Tab Input message Tab Error alert Tab

For creating list steps are as follow:

Select target cell Go in data, select data validation In setting tab select list option from allow Select the desired source Press OK button then list appear in target cell

Programming of S&T H.E. Design in Excel

First of all make a data table in spreadsheet. From Vlookup function, able to get value of constant of desired
component.

Make a list as described above. All properties are calculated at mean temperature shell and tube side
respectively.

Giving cell reference accordingly so transfer the properties from one sheet
to other.

All graphs readings are converted into equation by using Trendline. Then adding formula in the cell according to Kern and Bell method.
