Main Coatings Types & their uses

To establish which type of coating should be applied where requires an understanding of: The capabilities of each product technology type, and that of the specific product

The performance requirements of each area where paint will be applied.

Main Coatings Types & their uses

We can develop a generalised set of advantages and disadvantages for each product type.

eg - Alkyds
+ + + Single Pack, so easy to apply and control stocks Fair-good durability and colour retention Relatively low-cost High water permeability Can not be used on underwater areas Low film builds per coat Poor chemical, alkali and acid resistance Poor abrasion resistance

Main Coatings Types & their uses

eg - Epoxies + + + + + + Excellent chemical, alkali and acid resistance Excellent resistance to harsh environment Very low moisture permeability Good abrasion resistance Excellent solvent resistance Excellent performance on immersion 2-pack Chalking - loss of initial gloss H&S Risk of Dermatitis Some curing issues at low temperatures Short pot life at high temperatures

Relative merits of Coating Systems
Coatings types can be grouped in terms of their general performance by the way that they form their film. Non-convertible paints dry by solvent evaporation only, and so have similar solvent and heat resistance. Polyurethanes and Epoxies cure by similar cross-linking processes and so resist solvents, chemical and temperature and produce tough coatings. It is possible to use the best properties of different types in hybrids such as Coal Tar Epoxies.

Marine Coating Requirements
Since different areas of a ship require different properties from the coating, different coating types are used for each area. For example, the underwater area requires anticorrosive protection, strength to resist abrasive damage as well as fouling resistance.

A specification is therefore developed to combine paints with these properties such as a Coal Tar Epoxy primer followed by an Self Polishing Copolymer Antifouling.

Coating Selection
The use of the wrong paint on the wrong job can have serious implications, and can be expensive and time consuming to rectify. The following must be considered: Price comparison on Rupees/L vs Rupees/m2 basis Loss factors Scheme Comparison Cost Benefit Analysis Paint compatibility

Main Coatings Types & their uses

Coating Selection
Consider some of the following.. - What is the substrate? (Steel, Aluminium etc)

- In-service environment? (Coastal, Highly polluted industrial etc) - Chemical resistance? (chemicals factory etc) - Long-term gloss retention? (PU vs Epoxy)
- Life expectancy? (Be realistic)

Main Coatings Types & their uses

Coating Selection
Consider some of the following.. - Surface preparation? (Be realistic)

- In service temperature? Most paints limited to 100120oC - Application temperature? Below 5oC epoxy curing slows - Contractor quality? (If poor, why spend a lot on paint!)
- HSE issues? (Legislation in some countries may differ)
