Smart Materials

AND THEIR APPLICATION IN ARCHITECTURE

Presented By: Maha B.

Functional, Smart, Innovative Materials

functional materials or smart materials :

Smart materials is a relatively new term for materials and products that have changeable properties and are able to reversibly change their shape or color in response to physical and/or chemical influences semi-smart materials are notable for their ability, for example, to change their shape in response to an influence once or a few times

Smart materials may be classified in two basic way:

Type 1- property changing Materials that undergo changes in one or more of their properties Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Magnetic, Thermal, in direct response to a change in the external stimuli associated with the environment surrounding the material Type 2- energy exchanging Materials that transform energy from one to an output energy in another form, and again do so directly and reversibly (piezoelectric, thermoelectric, photovoltaic'setc.)

Smart Materials Applications

(ARCHITECTURAL)

Thermo-Bimetal
Is basically two different metals laminated together (usually steel and copper) and when they are heated one reacts more quickly and bends in one direction, then when they cool down they go back to their original position. The best part about using this material within building facades is that it reacts automatically with the sun or with heat to open and close, creating shade where and when it is needed without the use of electricity or power of any kind.

Thermo bimetal was originally thought of as a material that could be used to automatically create shade where it is needed but that is not the only way it could be used. It can be used as a ventilation system as well, by creating a system that when hot air rises up the metal above it opens to release it.

ShapeShift
ShapeShift is an experiment in future possibilities of architectural materialization. This project explores the potential application of electro-active polymer (EAP) at an architectural scale.

It is an ultra-lightweight, flexible material with the ability to change shape without the need for mechanical actuators.

The initial concept was to develop an automated/responsive air control and lighting/shading system, which could be incorporated in a new kind of building skin.

EAP is a highly attractive component for kinetic architectural applications due to its extreme flexibility, lightness, thin dimensions and smooth actuation. The thin film shall function as a possible replacement for conventional building skins and envisions the concept of a futuristic soft and flexible architecture. This is intended to generate a unique spatial experience and to change how the built environment is perceived in general.

Phototropia
Phototropia is a solar-powered architectural installation made of "smart materials" that move and light up when someone is nearby. It is a combination of electro-active polymers, electroluminescent displays, bioplastics, and thin-film dyesensitized solar cells. The installation is completely selfsufficient, using solar energy stored in batteries below the platform to power the movement of the polymers and to illuminate the displays

Studio Roosegarde
Studio Roosegaarde is a social design lab of artist Daan Roosegaarde with his team of designers and engineers.
The studio creates interactive designs that explore the dynamic relation between people, technology and space. The studio develops its own technology and is internationally known for interactive projects

Daan Roosegarde

Artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde (1979) is internationally known for creating social designs that explore the relation between people, technology and space.

Dune
DUNE is the public interactive landscape that interacts with human behavior. This hybrid of nature and technology is composed of large amounts of fibers that brighten according to the sounds and motion of passing visitors.

Lotus
LOTUS is a living wall composed of smart foils that fold open in response to human behavior. Walking by LOTUS, hundreds of aluminum foils unfold themselves in an organic way; generating transparent voids between private and public. Via LOTUS, physical walls are made immaterial, giving way to a poetic morphing of space and people.

Crystal
CRYSTAL are hundreds of crystals of light which brighten when you touch them. People can play and share their stories of light. Artist Daan Roosegaarde calls them Lego from Mars. The name refers not only to its futuristic design, but also to its endless potential to play.. Each Crystal contains LEDs that are wirelessly charged via a magnetic floor. Once visitors start adding, moving or sharing Crystals, the basic breathing of the Crystals changes. The lighting behavior of crystals moves from excited to bored, keeping visitors curious.

Marbles
MARBLES are large glowing shapes which interact with people via sound, light and color. Each MARBLE contains LEDs and smart sensors that instinctively respond to human touch, changing their mood from 'bored' to 'excited'. MARBLES are also able to multiply these interactions between themselves, communicating with each other. MARBLES transforms the landscape into an interactive meeting place of light.

Flow
FLOW is a smart wall composed of hundreds of ventilators that interact with passing visitors. By walking and interacting with the wall, visitors trigger an illusive landscape of transparent fields and artificial wind.

Sustainable Dance Floor

SUSTAINABLE DANCE FLOOR is the interactive dance floor which generates electricity through the act of dancing. sustainability is about doing more, instead of less. Via smart technologies a sensual and interactive environment is created in which dancers are engaged with the sustainable experience.

Smart Highway
Smart Highway are interactive and sustainable roads of today. New designs include the Glow-in-theDark Road, Dynamic Paint, Interactive Light, Induction Priority Lane and Wind Light. The goal is to make roads which are more sustainable and interactive by using light, energy and road signs that automatically adapt to the traffic situation.
