Some little changes

and one big one.

First, the little things.

Scope (Section 1.1)

MARKETING Other Structures added PUBLICATIONS Consistent with AISC 360 (the AISC REDESIGN Specification for Structural Steel Buildings)
Buildings and Bridges (same as always) Also affects Section 1.4

References (Section 1.2)

The usual editorial update

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS REDESIGN

Tolerances (Section 1.9)

MARKETING Section 1.9 added as invoking language PUBLICATIONS Also addresses tolerances not explicitly REDESIGN covered in the Code
Tolerances remain in Sections 6 and 7 Specifically that tolerances not covered are not to be assumed as zero

Structural Steel (Section 2.1)

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS Considered structural if attached to the structural frame REDESIGN

Clarification on base plates and bearing plates

Not if they are loose items that do not attach to the structural steel frame

Drawing Information (Section 3.1)

MARKETING Editorial improvements made in the PUBLICATIONS Commentary Improves list of items that should be provided REDESIGN
in the contract documents Works with information added on column differential shortening and anticipated deflections in the Commentary to Section 7.13

Pre-Detailing Conference (Section 4.1)

MARKETING Commentary information added on prePUBLICATIONS detailing conference Summarizes importance and benefits REDESIGN
Goal: to open lines of communication and develop a common understanding about the project

Erection Drawings (Section 4.7)

MARKETING New section PUBLICATIONS Similar requirements as for shop drawings REDESIGN Oriented toward ensuring the Erector has
information when it is needed

Truss Camber (Section 6.4.3)

MARKETING Essentially the same PUBLICATIONS Better treatment of incidental camber in trusses REDESIGN

EOR Structure Narrative (Section 7.10.1)

MARKETING Information added in the Commentary PUBLICATIONS Better describes special erection conditions or other considerations that are required by REDESIGN the design concept
Highlights special considerations in the erection of cantilevered members

AESS Welds (Section 10.2.5)

MARKETING Affects treatment of groove welds PUBLICATIONS Specifically tied to butt joints and outside cornerREDESIGN joints
Editorial clarification

Now, the big one.

The complete connection design shall be shown in the structural design drawings

Option 1
The intent of this approach is that complete design information necessary for detailing the connection is shown in the structural design drawings. The steel detailer will then be able to transfer this information to the shop and erection drawings

Option 2
The connection shall be designated to be selected or completed by an experienced steel detailer

Subst. Connection Info.

It is the information submitted by the fabricator, if requested by the SER, when option (2) or option (3) is designated for connections Early on, the fabricator and SER need to discuss and agree on representative samples of the required substantiating connection information

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS REDESIGN

Review and Approval

The connection design engineer must review and confirm in writing, as part of the substantiating connection information, that the shop and erection drawings properly incorporate the connection designs. This review does not replace the approval process of the shop and erection drawings by the SER. It is in addition to it.

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS REDESIGN

Teamwork
The SER is inviting the fabricator and the licensed professional engineer in responsible charge of the connection design to be a part of the SERs design team.

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS REDESIGN

Final Authority
The SER is identified as the final authority in the case of a dispute between the SER and the licensed professional engineer in responsible charge of the connection design when option (3) is specified. This is simple and straightforward, and it is how it must be because only the SER has the full knowledge of the structure.

MARKETING PUBLICATIONS REDESIGN

Summary
Simple and straightforward approach to a practice that already exists, is in wide use, and currently is widely varying in how it is used. Has appropriate limits for all three options. Language allows all parties to control their own risks, and no party is asked to assume the responsibility for the negligence of another party.
