Kiswah is the cloth that covers the


Kaaba in Mecca. It is draped annually in
the month of Dhu al-Hijjah.

The kiswah was first introduced
during the pre-islamic era. It is
disputed whether the kiswah
was made by Ishmael, or the
great-great grandfather of
Muhammad, Adnan bin Ad.

Muhammad and the Muslims in
Mecca did not participate in the
draping of the Kaaba until the
conquest of the city at 630 CE
(7 AH), as the ruling tribe,
Quraish, did not allow them to
do so. When Mecca was taken
by the Muslims, they decided to
leave the Kiswah as it was until
a woman lighting incense in the
Kaaba accidentally burned the
Kiswah. Muhammad then
draped it with a white Yemeni
cloth.

the Kiswah and in the same year, the
Holy Kabah Kiswah factory was founded,

This is a piece of the “Kiswa,” a specially
adorned black silk cloth which covers the
entire Kaaba housing in Mecca. Talented
artisans embroider the cloth with real gold
plated silver threads into amazing intricate
Arabic writing designs of verses from the
KISWA

The current height of the


Kaaba is 39 feet, 6 inches
and total size comes to 627
square feet.
The inside room of the Kaaba
is 42.64x29.52 feet. The
Kaaba's walls are one 3.28
feet wide. The floor inside is
7.22 feet higher than the
place where people perform
Tawaf.
The ceiling and roof are two
levels made out of wood.
They were reconstructed with
teak which is capped with
stainless steel.

The present cost of making the kiswa amounts to SR 17


million [U.S. dollar This small building has been
constructed and reconstructed by Prophets Adam, Ibrahim,
Ismail and Muhammad (peace be upon them). No other
building has had this honor.

gifted to certain individuals, visiting foreign Muslim dignitaries
and organisations. Some of them sell their share as souvenirs
of Haj. Earlier Umar bin al-Khattab would cut it in to pieces and
distribute them among the pilgrims who used them as shelter
from the heat of Makkah
