1564 Test For Ethernet Links

Slide 1

PM1-1SN110014-00

Ethernet and Y.1564

Types of tests Today.
BERT (Bit Error Rate Test),
Not very effect at testing Ethernet,
Commonly requested as customers are comfortable with this technology. Designed to test audio lines based on the human brain???

RFC2544,
Commonly referred to as the reference point for testing Ethernet,
Originally designed for network elements, adopted by telecom operators.

MultiStream,
Not a standard but customers confirm the network using it.
Simple straight forward check of the network.

*No one method is the best, customer dependant*

Slide 2

PM1-1SN110014-00

Ethernet and Y.1564

Types of tests Today.
RFC2544
Designed for testing Ethernet networks using different frame sizes. Completes several tests (sequentially) including,
Throughput,
Speed at which the frame size transfers through the network.
A

Frame Loss,
Number of fames lost while transferring through the network.

Latency,
Time the frame takes to transfer through the network.

Ethernet cloud network

Packet Jitter, (not standard)

The variation of the frame arrival.

Burstability (often not tested),

Ability of the network to be able to handle burst frames.

Also defines 2 types of switch resets not used by operators.

Slide 3

Ethernet and Y.1564

Types of tests Today.
MultiStream,
As many end users networks consist of multiple streams of traffic (across the WAN network) on different VLAN.
Telecom operators simulate this by generating multiple streams.

Very good for checking CoS (Class of Service),

Confirms the network routing is correct, Confirms throughput per VLAN,

Set-up can be complicated depending on network configuration,

Each stream configured independently, Depending on network configuration the tester configuration requires to be adjusted.

Results can be complicated to analyze,

Different network configuration mean different thresholds of what is pass or fail.

Not able to test different frame sizes (elements perform differently).

You might have heard of it.
Y.1564 was while in draft format within the ITU-T called Y.156sam.
All ITU-T standards are numeral only so they often use letters at the end until its released.

sam at the end of Y.156sam stands for,

Service Activation Test Methodology.
The full name is An Ethernet Service Activation Test Methodology

How the test works. Completed in two sections,
Service Configuration Test,
Confirms the network is able to transfer a single stream of frames (Test Flow) at Troubleshoot Ethernet the required configuration Services confirming the Throughput,
IR (Information Rate).

Service Performance Test,

Transmits all Test Flows simultaneously at the CIR confirming no errors over a configured duration.

Requires Pass / Fail results based on SAC (Service Acceptance Criteria) information.

New methodology to test multiple Ethernet services simultaneously in a network (optional) RFC 2544 is the standard commonly used today
Originally designed for checking performance of a network device Runs one service at a time,
Tests in a serial manner not running all services simultaneously Comparison of test methodology
Item Designed for Concurrent services Simulates Testing time Test result
10

ITU-T Y.1564 Service activation Multiple services simultaneously A realistic network Short due to simultaneous test / service Directly related to SLA requirements

RFC 2544 Devices performance One service at a time One service in a network Long due to serial nature of test (assuming completed per full standard) Link performance limit

ITU-T Y.1564 completes the testing in two phases
Service Configuration Test Confirm each individual service is configured correctly checking, CIR (Committed Information Rate), EIR (Excess Information Rate), FTD (Frame Transfer Delay), FDV (Frame Delay Variation), FLR (Frame Loss Ratio), CBS (Committed Burst Size), EBS (Excess Burst Size). Service Performance Test Transmits one or many Service Configuration Tests simultaneously at the CIR confirming all traffic is able to traverse the network under the full service load over time.
RFC 2544 completes tests one after another.

Y.1564 completes a quick per service test followed by the performance test.

Y.1564 and Reflector. Y.1564 can be completed using two testers or a single tester with a reflector at the far end.
When testing FTD the standard recognizes one way measurements SHOULD use synchronization to align their measurement clocks.
Clock accuracy and drift over time becomes very important, As syncing equipment clocks is critical, its not normally practical test in the field.

It will be possible for testing to be completed via a Master Slave situation or a reflector.
It could also be possible to complete testing with a hard loopback in appropriate networks.
In this configuration Y.1564 testing becomes less relative.
