MAINTENANCE OF REGIONAL WATER SUPPLY SCHEMES

AREAS OF MAINTENANCE
SR.NO 1 2 3 4 AREA SOURCE MACHINERY CONVEYANCE MAIN STORAGE, SP & CT

SOURCE
Which details we must have Position of strainer and blank pipes of tube well For what To place the submersible pump set against blank pipe Why To prevent the sand infiltration into tube well, which results in frequent failure of machinery and tube well.

PUMPING MACHINERY
Points to take care of:Sr.No Description 1 2 3 4 Pumping machinery shall be of suitable head and discharge. During repairs there are changes of altering of head and discharge which must be taken care of. Pressure gauge and water meter are essential for monitoring head and discharge of pump Fuse wire must be of required size they are very important in saving the electric and mechanical devices during electric fluctuations.

Panel board must have suitable combination of Contactors, Relay, HRC fuse. The input and output cables must be according to the load Panel board must have single phase preventor, auto switch and other indicating devices in working condition. For safety rubber matting shall be provided near control panel Operator shall be provided with standard hand gloves and safe equipments for minor repairs of control panels etc. Proper electrification and ventilation is necessary for safe and healthy atmosphere.

CONVEYANCE MAIN:Every field engineer must have factual records such as

1)Ground levels
2)Size of pipe along with length 3)Demand of water on each and every section 4)Actual position of control valves and air valves.

Design failure of conveyance mains

When capacity of machinery alters When design of rising main is not according to discharge of machinery When demand of water is not accessed correctly. When there is over drawl of water more than the design.

Maintenance of conveyance mains

Air valve must function properly Regular greasing of sluice valves Leakage shall be attainted properly and non conventional methods of temporary repairing the leakages shall be avoided. After repairing leakage back filling of earth shall not be avoided.

Importance of control valves in distribution system

Regional water supply scheme consists of main, sub main line and various branches. The terminal pressure at the supply point varies hence the discharge flow in pipes is not justified. Control valves shall always be operated to equalize the flow between all branches. It is observed that many times control valves are not operated at all and even not available in many schemes.
