Chapter I
Background
Pronunciation is one of the language components that must be mastered by the learners in order to be successful in communication. Having good pronunciation also can help the students to transfer their ideas smoothly and can make conversation understandable.
English has twelve vowels and twenty-seven consonants while Bahasa Indonesia has six vowels and twenty-three consonants. The different number of consonant in
Indonesia only has 1 consonant G in whatever environment as in (initial position: goyang, genggam medial position: jaga, agak final position: rembug, bedug etc) while in English there are 2 variation sounds of consonant G, they are /g/ (green, figure, great grey etc) and /d/ (giraffe, gym, imagine etc)
The authentic materials are the materials that have been produced originally to fulfil some social purpose in the language community. Authentic material is the real material from native speaker which can stimulate the students to be familiar with the real language communication.
Problem Statement
Can the use of Authentic Materials improve the ability of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Palu in pronouncing consonant letter g and c?
Research objective The objective of this research is to prove that the use of authentic materials can improve students ability in pronouncing consonant letter g and c of the eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Palu.
Research Significance For the students, it is expected to build their confidence in English language especially to say word by word that they do not know and use the language. For the teachers, the results of this research will make a variation of the media that can be used in teaching English. For the readers, the result of this research is expected to become scientific information.
Research Scope The researcher will limit the research on pronouncing of consonant letter g and c and the use of authentic, listening and reading materials.

Sample
The researcher will choose the sample by using random sampling technique since there are 10 classes of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Palu.
Research Variables
The dependent variable of this research is improving the pronunciation of consonant letter g and c of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Palu, while the independent variable is the use of authentic materials as the media.
