Basics about Operating System

A mobile phone operating system (OS) is a type of software that performs the basic operations required by a modern phone. The operating system, for example, is essential for basic functions such as text messages, phone calls and accessing the Internet. It also is used for running additional applications, commonly referred to as apps, and interpreting user input.

Operating Systems available in the market

There are many different mobile phone operating systems currently being used. Some of the most well known are Symbian, Blackberry OS, iOS, Windows mobile and Android. Most of them are associated with specific brands. Android is open source and found in HTC, Samsung. Symbian is open source and found in Nokia, Sony. Blackberry OS is used by Blackberry. Apples iOS is used on iPhone, iPad, iPod. Windows Phone used by Microsofts Pocket PCs.

Description
Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005. Android is open source and Google releases the code under the Apache License. This opensource code and permissive licensing allows the software to be freely modified and distributed by device manufacturers, wireless carriers and enthusiast developers. Additionally, Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of devices, written primarily in a customized version of the Java programming language. In October 2012, there were approximately 700,000 apps available for Android

History
Android, Inc. was founded in Palo Alto, California in October 2003 by Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White to develop, in Rubin's words "smarter mobile devices that are more aware of its owner's location and preferences". The early intentions of the company were to develop an advanced operating system for digital cameras, when it was realised that the market for the devices was not large enough, and diverted their efforts to producing a smartphone operating system to rival those of Symbian and Windows Mobile Google acquired Android Inc. on August 17, 2005, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Google. Key employees of Android Inc., including Rubin, Miner and White, stayed at the company after the acquisition.

Market Share
A developer survey conducted in AprilMay 2013 found

that Android is the most popular platform for developers, used by 71% of the mobile developer population. Android's share of the global smartphone market, led by Samsung products, was 64% in March 2013. In July 2013 there were 11,868 models of Android device, scores of screen sizes and eight OS versions simultaneously in use. As of May 2013, 48 billion apps have been installed from the Google Play store, and as of September 3, 2013, 1 billion Android devices have been activated.

Applications
There are a no. of applications in Android, we would like to discuss some of them: Apps to Watch like Sports Republic, Showyou, Telly. Photography Apps like ProCapture, PicSay Pro, Camera 2. Travel Apps like FlightTrack, Wikitude, WorldMate. Fashion Apps like Fancy, Pinterest, Pose. Music Apps like TuneIn Radio Pro, Soundwave, SoundHound

Pros
Very Costomizable. Open source operating system is

easily changed, hacked, manipulated, and molded to fit whatever functionality you had in mind. Found on all platforms for all prices depending on what hardware and software version you are interested in. Second largest app store. The battery is usually replaceable. True multi-Tasking.

Cons
Open source operating system is great for developers but not good for security. Many reports of potential security threats at this time. On that note updates are being released very frequently to fix holes in the system and the Android market is being checked regularly for potential threats.
