Puducherry.
The Directorate of School Education
in collaboration with the UNDP and Department
of Revenue and Disaster Management,
Puduchery organized training Programme for
the Heads of institutions on School Safety
The Heads of Institutions were trained on the following
aspects:

1. Awareness Generation- Sensitization Meeting for


Teachers & Students

2. Formation of School Disaster Management


Committee and Safety Teams - Task Forces

8. Training to the Task Forces – First Aid Team,


Warning and Information team , dissemination team,
Search and Rescue team, Fire Safety team etc

12.Preparation of School Dissaster Management

Moreover the Revenue and Disaster
management Department, Puducherry spent
an amount of Rs.2,50,000.00 to all regions) of
the U.T of Puducherry for the orientation on
School safety programme , the preparation of
disaster management plans and for the
conduct of mock drills for the students.
Impact of the School Disaster Management Plan
All Heads and One Teacher trained on Disaster

Other Teachers and Students were trained by the
Heads of Institutions

Basic First Aid and Rescue method learned


Hazard identification and suitable mechanism is ensured
School plans are completed and submitted .
After Kumbakonam fire accident killing
93 Students in 2004 and the Tsunami
attack on the east coast washing away
so many lives in 2004, the Environment
Education Cell (EEC) attached to State
Training Centre (STC), Directorate of
School Education decided to orient
teachers and the Heads of institutions
towards creating awareness on disaster
management.
In this regard the faculty members of State Training Centre ,
State Laison Officer of NSS and Principals of HSS were
deputed to attend Key resource person training programme
On

NCERT, New Delhi
NIDM, New Delhi
First the EEC published a booklet on disaster
management explaining the cause for disasters and
the preventive measures to be taken before, during
and after any disaster.
The training programme on Disaster Management were
conducted in batches for two days in which they were
trained how to take precautionary steps before and
during disasters such as fire, tsunami, earth quake,
flood, etc and to organize suitable activities in schools
towards creating awareness through dramas, role plays
and songs, etc.
Moreover the teachers were trained
on conducting mock drills in schools
in evacuating students during disaster
periods and on setting up of disaster
management committees in schools
involving the local people and on
displaying the evacuation routes in
schools for quick and safe escape
from disasters.

Reports of the setting up of the disaster
management committee in schools, the disaster
management plan, the school mapping and the
conduct of mock drills were obtained from the
respective schools by STC, which in turn were
submitted to the Department of Revenue and
Disaster Management, Puducherry.

Core Committee is formed to implement the activities

Awareness Pamphlets , Posters and


Booklets supplied by UNDP are yet to be
distributed to all the schools through
inspecting officers.

Steps has been taken to include a chapter


on

From Standard III to IX
Requirement
More Funds and Human Resources
to enhance the activity
More experts needed in the field of
Disaster Management – to face
Chemical and Nuclear hazards
