What do you notice about the punctuation of the two sentences? We use commas to separate a non- restrictive relative clause from the rest of the sentence. 4. NOTE
Restrictive
Use: to tell us which person/thing/time/place/reason we are talking about. Watch out: Restrictive relative clauses are not separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. That can be used instead of who, which or whom. We can often leave out the word which introduces the relative clause when it is the object of the clause.
Non- restrictive
Use: to give extra information about someone/ something. Watch out: Nonrestrictive relative clauses are separated from the rest of the sentence by commas. That cant be used. We cant leave out the word which intrduces the relative clause. Which can refer back to the whole of the sentence.
