RAN Architecture
CN
The CN provides call control as well as mobility for, and localization of, the User Equipment (UE). The CN also interacts with the Radio Network Controller (RNC) and provides support for network features and telecommunication services. The CN handles both packet-oriented services, such as data, and circuit-oriented services, such as speech. CN consists of MSC,MGW,SGSN,GGSN,HLR
RNC
The RNC interacts with the CN as well as the RBS nodes and manages radio links. The RNC also controls mobility and optimizes the radio network resources. A single RNC can handle one or more RBS nodes, and it can work with other RNCs to increase capacity Most of the RAN features are controlled by the RNC Handles communication towards all CN (RANAP), other RNC (RNSAP), and User Plane connections (AAL/IP based)
RBS(Node-B)
The RBS node provides radio resources for the RAN. The RBS node functionality is subdivided into traffic and O & M functions: The traffic related functions handle the user data traffic and control communication with the RNC and the UE. This also includes the handling of cells, transport channels, and ATM/Ethernet links. The O & M functions ensure that the system becomes and remains operational, handles equipment malfunctions, HW, SW, upgrade, and monitors the RBS node performance.
RXI
The RXI is in the WCDMA RAN. It is used as an aggregator or as a hub in the access transport network. The functions of the RXI are as follows: Aggregates traffic to the RNC Provides functionality and services required by the access transport layer in the RAN network Supports network synchronization Supports the managements functions of the O & M and OSS through support for IP/ATM
OSS-RC
OSSRC is a software that handles O&M tasks for the WCDMA RAN. OSSRC is designed for handling daily operation and maintenance tasks of the network. It complements the element management (EM) functions implemented in the nodes to create a complete network element management environment for the network. OSSRC provides coordinated management of several nodes for certain tasks, such as software loading, inventory and configuration of the WCDMA RAN. OSSRC also facilitates the definition of alarm subscription in all nodes.
