Aquaculture needs more Farm Based Research


Research . What does it mean? Testing. Tweaking. Trying new things. Call it what you will. But many farmers call it their key to success. Acquisition of new knowledge. Farm based research. Cheaper more efficient. More practical. Smaller Projects. Learn More. Better VFM

The Approach of the Aquaculture Initiative to SME research (1)


Encourage producers to increase site efficiency by gathering info on their sites and by innovating (techniques / equipment).
Foster conditions for innovation. Best research is farm based research.

Each site has very specific characteristics.

Increase research activity into the efficiency of production. Through production orientated projects. Increased awareness of innovation and best practice through out the sector. Develop farm activities. E.g. more disease resistant strains faster growing species.

ATDC Project Approach (3)


you can only manage what you measure.

Small number of farms can work to our advantage. Collaboration can have a big impact.
Emphasis on the practice. Producers within NI are not in competition with each other. But can learn from each other.

Innovation Vouchers
SME can receive 4K of research from a Knowledge Provider. Develop a solution to a business issue. Not agricultural. Team up with 39 organisations on the island of Ireland. 10 in North 29 in the South. Can apply as an individual or as a group (combine the credits into a large project) calls in Oct / Feb / March Max is three per company (each voucher for a different project)

INI Boosting Business


INI registered companies To register provide some details on the T/O and level of exports involved. Non primary production aspect of the business. ERDF programme Up to 75% grant support of a project maximum expenditure of 66K Not aimed at capital expenditure but salaries travel & accommodation other costs (e.g. consultancy is eligible)

EFF Productive Investment in Aquaculture


Capital Expenditure 40% grant (ex VAT) Application (1) on paper (2) on line Two quotes for each item below 30K Second hand equipment (as long as not previously grant aided) is eligible. Available to FCL holders. Producing fish for the table. But, time is running out

EFF Collective Actions


Who may apply? Projects which cover measures of common interest with a broader scope than normally undertaken by private enterprises. Help meet the objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy. Project of common interest from private enterprises, trade organisations and federations, fishers, fish farmers, processors and those acting on their behalf.
