INTRODUCTION

SOLID WASTE

Solid waste means any garbage, refuse, sludge from a wastewater treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded materials including solid, liquid, semisolid, or contained gaseous material, resulting from industrial, commercial, mining and agricultural operations, and from community activities.

HAZARDOUS WASTE

A solid waste, or combination of solid waste, which because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical, or infectious characteristics may (a) cause, or significantly contribute to, an increase in mortality or an increase in serious irreversible, or incapacitating reversible, illness; or (b) pose a substantial present or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported, or disposed of, or otherwise managed.

EXAMPLE
Acid Bases, Cyanide Organics (non-flammable) Flammables Oxidizers Pesticides Paints Organic solvents Non-hazardous wastes for recycling

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE

Hazardous Waste Potentially hazardous to human health or the environment when they are improperly managed

Solid Waste Are non-liquid, non-soluble materials ranging from municipal garbage to industrial wastes that contain complex and sometimes hazardous substances. Include sewage sludge, agricultural refuse, demolition wastes, and mining residues.

They possess at least one of four characteristics (ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity), or appear on special EPA lists.

THE CAUSE OF SOLID AND HAZARDOUS WASTE

CAUSE
Population growth Increase in industrials manufacturing Urbanization Modernization Modernization, technological advancement and increase in global population created rising in demand for food and other essentials. This has resulted to rise in the amount of waste being generated daily by each household. 158 million tons of municipal solid waste is produced annually in U.S

IMPACTS
Animal and Aquatics Life

Environment

IMPACTS ON HEALTH
Chemical poisoning through chemical inhalation Uncollected waste can obstruct the storm water runoff resulting in flood Low birth weight Cancer Congenital malformations Neurological disease

Nausea and vomiting Increase in hospitalization of diabetic residents living near hazard waste sites. Mercury toxicity from eating fish with high levels of mercury.

(2003) Evaluating Environmental Impacts of solid Waste Management Alternatives. BioCycle, 52-56.

IMPACTS ON ANIMALS AND AQUATIC LIFE

Increase in mercury level in fish due to disposal of mercury in the rivers. Plastic found in oceans ingested by birds Resulted in high algal population in rivers and sea. Degrades water and soil quality

IMPACTS ON ENVIRONMENT
Waste breaks down in landfills to form methane, a potent greenhouse gas Change in climate and destruction of ozone layer due to waste biodegradable Littering, due to waste pollutions, illegal dumping, Leaching: is a process by which solid waste enter soil and ground water and contaminating them.

CONCLUSION
Solid and hazardous waste are harmful to the environment, humans and also flora and fauna. Proper methods of waste disposal have to be undertaken to ensure that it does not affect the environment around the area or cause health hazards to the people living there.

QUESTION??
1) Give two examples of solid and hazardous waste. 2) Give two cause of solid and hazardous waste. 3) Give two impact of solid and hazardous waste on health. 4) Give two impact of solid and hazardous waste on environments. 5) Give two impact of solid and hazardous waste on animal and aquatic life.
