oppression in Ireland
and the union of Ireland.
IRA
 According to the

Britannica IRA is a Irish
military organization
also called Provisional
Irish Republican Army
seeking the end of British
rule in Northern Ireland
and the unification of the
province with the republic
of Ireland.
IRA
 When the FREE
STATE was
established in 1922,
the IRA was
responsible for several
bombings and street
battles on both sides
of the border.
IRA
 At first sight, the IRA
was very popular and
effective, but after
Eamon De Valera
took over the
government of The
Free State, the IRA
lost its supporters and
became less attractive
for the public.
IRA
 Because of its activities
in the 1940s against
Ireland and the Irish
people, the IRA was
declined rapidly, and in
the 1950s it was
banned by the Irish
government, so it
became a secret
organization.
IRA
 In the late 50s the IRA was comitted
several bombing attacks in London, Belfast
or Ulster. After silent years it became active
again in the late 60s. In 1969 the
organization was splitted into 2 groups:
• The officials (majority)  against terrorist
activities
• Provisionals  terrorism is necessary
IRA

and unsuccessfully tried to assassinate Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher in Brighton, England.
IRA
 In 1994 hopes for peace were raised when
the IRA declared a cease-fire. Its legal
political arm started to get ahold of the talks
with the British Government. After new
terrorist activities in 1996, a new cease-fire
was announced in 1997.
 1998  Accord  greater cooperation
between Northern Ireland and the Irish
Republic
The IRA and the 21st century
 In 2001, this sensitive balance was splitted
when several crime incidents began and
continued in the following years.
 In 2006  new accord was born in which
the British and Irish Governments
announced that they believed in the IRA’s
cease-fire and they said that they hoped
that the IRA would make steps against
crime and terrorism in the near future.
