Introduction to piezoelectricity
The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure. It is derived from the Greek piezo or piezein , which means to squeeze or press, and electric or electron which stands for amber, an ancient source of electric charge Piezoelectricity is the charge that accumulates in certain solid materials (notably crystals, certain ceramics, and biological matter such as bone, DNA and various proteins) in response to applied mechanical stress
Piezoelectricity was discovered in 1880 by French physicists Jacques and Pierre Curie. The piezoelectric effect is understood as the linear electromechanical piezoelectric effect (the internal generation of electrical charge resulting from an applied mechanical force) also exhibit the reverse piezoelectric effect (the internal generation of a mechanical strain resulting from an applied electrical field).
Piezoelectric materials
Quartz (utilized in our minor project) Zirconate titanate crystal Gallium orthophosphate (GaPO4) Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14)
Polarization of polycrystals
In the polycrystal when the material is compressed a voltage of the same polarity as the poling voltage is produced will appear between the electrodes. If the piezoelectric material is stretched then a voltage of opposite polarity is produced between the electrodes.
Basic principle
The intensity of voltage depends upon the applied force and area.
P =F/A
Feasibility analysis
The purpose of this project is to provide the details of a feasibility study regarding the piezo electric foot steps. In general terms, piezoelectric devices generate a voltage when a force is applied, which can be harnessed to generate electricity. This force came from a human foot.
When a force is exerted on a piezoelectric material, it undergoes a mechanical strain, which creates equal and opposite charges on each face of the material. These charges can drive a current to generate and store power. The voltage generated by a piezoelectric material is calculated as v=dL/D where dL is the change in thickness of the material due to an external force, V is the voltage generated and D is a property of the piezoelectric material.
The amount of charge calculated is equal to Q=DxF where Q is the charge, D is the same material property mentioned above and F is the force exerted on the material. Again, D is on the order of which results in a very small amount of charge being generated. To solve this problem, piezoelectric materials are often arranged in stacks such that they generate a more useful amount of charge.
Applications of piezoelectricity
Electricity generation on road-
Pressure applied on the road due to the weight of the vehicles is used to generate electricity
In security alarmWhen the foot pressure is applied on floor the piezo electric sensors embedded on the floor detect the pressure and generates electricity.
The electricity generated flows through the circuit of the alarm system and actuates the alarm.
