What Is the Meaning of Research?

The meaning of research is to look into a specific subject and find out as much information as you can. Research should start at the beginning or as far back as you possibly can and then move forward. Research can include interviewing, experimenting, or any other action that helps you find information.

Objective of research :
The objective of research process is to produce new knowledge which takes three forms:

Exploratory: research which structures and identifies new problems.

Constructive: develops solutions to a problem. Empirical : Tests the feasibility of a solution using empirical evidence.

Types of research:
1.Applied research 2.Basic research 3.Correlation research 4.Descriptive research 5.Ethnographic research 6.Experimental research 7.Exploratory research 8.Historical research 9.Qualitative research

10.Quantitative research

On a broader perspective, all researches can be classified into two groups: Qualitative research Quantitative research

Qualitative research:
It is research dealing with phenomena that are difficult or impossible to quantify mathematically, such as beliefs , meanings , attributes and symbols.

Quantitative research:
It refers to the systematic empirical investigation of any phenomena via statistical, mathematical or computational techniques.

Approaches of research:
There are mainly 2 types of approaches.

1.Quantitative approach:
It usually involves collecting and converting data into numerical form so that statistical calculations can be made and conclusions drawn.

2.Qualitative approach:
The approach adopted by qualitative researchers tends to be inductive which means that they develop a theory or look for a pattern of meaning on the basis of the data that they have collected.

Quantitative approach is sub divided into 1.Inferential approach 2.Experimental approach

3.Simulation approach

Importance of Research?
The main importance of research is to produce knowledge that can be

applied outside a research setting. Research also forms the foundation of

program development and policies everywhere around the universe. It also solves particular existing problems of concern.

Research Methods vs. Research Methodology :

research methods are the methods by which you conduct research into a subject or a
topic. On the other hand research methodology explains the methods by which you may proceed with your research. Research methods involve conduct of experiments, tests, surveys and the like. On the other hand research methodology involves the learning of the various techniques that can be used in the conduct of research and in the conduct of tests, experiments, surveys and critical studies. research methods aim at finding solutions to research problems. On the other hand research methodology aims at the employment of the correct procedures to

find out solutions.

Meaning of scientific methods:

The scientific method is the essential process through which scientific inquiry is governed. Through it, knowledge is accrued, theories formulated, hypotheses tested and results applied. It is broadly comprised of five major steps: questioning, researching, hypothesizing, testing and analysis.

Research Process:
It is nothing but the Series of various actions, which are necessary to effective research work. Research process consist of a number of closely related activities. Various steps involved in a research process are not mutually exclusive; nor they are separate & distinct.

Steps involved in research process:

1.Establishing the needs for research 2.Defining the problem 3.Formation and Development working hypothesis 4.Determining research design 5.Identifying information types and source 6.Determing methods of assessing data 7.Designing data collection form 8.Determining sample plan and size

9.Data collection
10.Analyzing data 11.Preparing and presenting final research report.

Criteria for a Good Research Process:

Research is an extremely cyclic process. This isnt a weakness of the process but is part of the built-in error

correction machinery.
Because of the cyclic nature of research, it can be difficult to determine where to start and when to stop.
