RMCI Coatings

A Technological Breakthrough in
Industrial Maintenance Coatings

- Save Time
- Save Steel
- Save Money
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

We saw the need and we researched it:

• One tonne of steel disappears in the world every 90
seconds due to corrosion.

• 95% of coating failures is due to poor surface

preparation and application.

• There is a serious backlog of maintenance projects

that will never be caught up with, due to cost, coating
methodology, and safety and environmental concerns.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

The backlog and the costs..

Surface preparation is by far the largest contributor to the cost of
applying conventional anti-corrosion coating systems.
The generally specified SA2.5 “near white metal blast” is an
almost impossible standard to reach and maintain in field
conditions..
A 3-coat system attracts higher labour cost.
Corrosion in inaccessible areas continue unabated. What could
have been a minor maintenance job, result in a major repair.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Pack Rust & Crevice

Corrosion
Pack Rust and Crevice Corrosion are perhaps
the most difficult issues faced by
maintenance engineers. If connections are
sealed up without treating them with an
active chemistry it will create an area of
negative oxygen that actually accelerates the
corrosion process.

Pack Rust and Crevice Corrosion at overlaps,

joints, flanges, rivets, and bolts etc. can:-

- Bend Beams and Cover Plates

- Diminish Structural Integrity

- Cause Expensive Maintenance Shutdowns

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Our Focus was to develop:

• A coating system with lower life-cycle cost.

• A coating system with lower installation costs.
• A simpler field maintenance methodology.
• A reduced environmental footprint.
• A system to combat pack rust and crevice corrosion.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

What we discovered:

• A technology existed that had been proven to provide

excellent corrosion protection over 20 years.
• The technology as currently being used had some
drawbacks.
• We took this proven technology and began work on ways of
adopting the basic chemistry to greatly enhance the
properties of formulated coatings.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

We moved that technology forward

• We developed harder and more durable coatings

• We are able to incorporate the basic anti-corrosion
compound into a variety of higher performance resins.
• We feel we now lead the world in adapting our RMCI -
Reactive Metal Corrosion Inhibitor compounds, into
coatings systems that can revolutionize the way
maintenance coating is specified and carried out.
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

Our RMCI coatings

• Are cheaper to apply.

• Have dramatically longer life cycles than conventional
coatings when applied over existing paint.
• Reduce the impact of surface preparation by up to 70%.
• Penetrate to treat pack-rust and crevice corrosion unlike
any conventional coating system.

MARKET RESEARCH

The Market

• Any initial scepticism should be allayed by reputable

corrosion test results and warranties.
• We will initially be a “niche” market product with high
value-added pricing policies.
• In time other manufacturers will follow with similar
technologies making it more “mainstream”.
• By then we have the branding advantage to maintain a
leadership position in the global market.
MARKET RESEARCH

The Market
Article Excerpt: JCT CoatingsTech (01-FEB-07)
• The industrial maintenance (IM) coatings has increased in
recent years. Players throughout the supply chain have
focused on development of new technologies to establish
competitive advantage and maximize their opportunities.
• Around the world, the highest growth rates can be seen in
Eastern Europe (7-8%) and Asia (9%).
• The petrochemical industries account for 50% of the market.
Bridges and highways 10%. Marine applications 10%. The
remaining 30% is divided among numerous end uses.
• Dow Coatings has identified the marine segment as one of the
fastest growing areas for industrial maintenance-type coatings.

STRATEGIC PLAN

Commercialisation

We are looking to enter into a strategic partnership to

bring our range of products to the market.
TECHNICAL

The Cyntax RMCI Series coatings protect steel substrates where Abrasive
Blasting surface preparation is not possible or practical, for either economic,
environmental, or safety reasons.

It also provide single-coat metal protection on bare steel that rivals that of
three coat conventional protective painting systems comprising a zinc-rich
primer, epoxy intermediate coat, and lightfast polyurethane top coat.

Often a structure with failing leaded paint can be scraped with hand tools
(SSPC SP-2) and over-coated with the Cyntax RMCI Series coatings for less
than one-third the cost.
TECHNICAL

Unique properties

Thixotropy
The ability to impart sag resistance to a high build coating.

Moisture Displacement
The RMCI compound has a higher affinity for metal than water
does. This gives Cyntax 8000 and 9000 Series products the ability
to effectively displace moisture from metal surfaces.

Adhesion
Our RMCI compounds obtain adhesion through charge attraction.
The positively charged calcium and double bonded oxygens have a
strong affinity for the negatively charged metal surface.
TECHNICAL

Unique properties
Acid Neutralisation
The excess basicity in Cyntax 8000 and 9000 Series products serves
to neutralize acids that penetrate the coating.

Thermal Stability
The RMCI compounds do not exhibit a melting point. Any softening
or dropping points are in excess of 2600C, and the RMCI compounds
remain flexible even when frozen in an applied coating.

PH Effects
The calcium carbonate Ca(CO3) available in the RMCI compound has
a solubility of 1 X 10-6 in any water entering the coating. Although
low, this is enough to set up a buffered ph of about 10.1. This ph
range is too basic for active corrosion (rust) and a passivating layer
is formed.
TECHNICAL

Unique properties
Hydrophobic Environment
Once the RMCI compounds have "plated out" with their charged
groups toward the metal, they orient a very hydrophobic
hydrocarbon chain structure outwards. This environment tends to
prevent water from reaching the metal and thus denies one of the
necessary ingredients for corrosion.

Undercutting
RMCI compound systems obtain adhesion through totally different
mechanisms than conventional paints. Conventional paints obtain
adhesion through hydroxyl, carboxyl and epoxide groups. Because
of this different adhesion system, the RMCI-based coatings are not
bothered by the ions generated during the corrosion process that
normally cause undercutting.
TECHNICAL

Our Cyntax RMCI product range

The Cyntax RMCI 8000 and 9000 Series products consist of the following:

8100
Single component impregnating treatment for crevices, joints etc
8200

Maintenance Coatings.
