nothing mark, therefore everyone in the group should contribute to presenting some of the information. Practical research groups- set up for developing stimuli and materials for data collection next week. I am away in PARIS for a conference so the class will be covered by another tutor (so please be extra prepared for testing)

one-minute retention interval, the participant group exposed to picture representations of 20 concrete nouns will have a significantly higher recall score than the group exposed to word representations of those stimuli. Test the effectiveness of PSE in sets of concrete nouns (objects/items you can interact with). Split into small groups (~4 people/group) Each group develops a set of 20 concrete nouns. When decided then find a picture which represents each of the 20 concrete nouns Develop a task to fill a retention interval Each group will test two other groups on their sets: One group with their Word stimuli the One group with the picturesassess memory of stimuli using free recall.

following database for guidance: Pavio et al. Word List Generator http://www.datavis.ca/online/paivio/ This is an online source for nouns used in the English language: Select number of items (we are looking for 20 words per group, but I would select 50 to start and choose from those). The only parameters we need to change are concreteness, which varies from 1-7. we want high concreteness so select from 5-7.
WORD Stimuli
Must be concrete nouns! Nothing too obscure.
Choose a word which is easy to illustrate. You dont want it to be ambiguous in meaning. You need to choose 20 words in total: you may generate multiple lists until you are happy with your 20 items. Make a note of the mean concreteness rating for your words (may need to be averaged if using multiple lists: (M1+M2+M3)/N of lists used =3
words you have selected from the database. Make sure they illustrate the word you have chosen: e.g. HOUSE
Needs to be clearly related to the word you are trying to generate. No restriction on the types of images selected, i.e drawings, photos etc.
one with the WORD stimuli and one with the PICTURE stimuli. Each item shown for 1 second followed by a blank screen for 1 second. The pictures/words must be controlled for size on the screen. All the words must be the same size in their presentation, all the pictures should be controlled too. As a class you need to decide on the type of items for the maths task you want to fill the retention interval with (it should occupy the participant for the full minute).
but need to be ready to run the experiment and collect data in class next week. Think about ethical issues related to the study. You will need to print consent forms and produce a debrief slide for your presentations.
replicable. (e.g. timings of presentation, how stimuli were selected/controlled, reasons for the structure of procedure.

Remember this is an account of how you conducted the study, it needs to be clear enough for a reader to replicate
it.
