eARLY LIFE
Dhirubhai was precocious and highly intelligent and also as highly impatient of the oppressive grinding mill of the school classroom. Formal education was not his forte, he realized very early in life.

After he completed his fifth standard in the village school, Dhirubhai was sent to the district town of Junagarh for further studies.

In his third year in the school he was elected general secretary of the Junagarh Students Union.

OFF TO ADEN

At the age of 17, goes to Aden (now part of Yemen) and works for A. Besse & Co. Ltd. office on the very day of his arrival as a clerk. sent to the commodities trading section of the firm. Later, is transferred to the section that handled petroleum products for the oil giant Shell. learn the tricks of the trade he offers to work for free at a Gujarati trading firm. There he learns accounting, book keeping, preparing shipping papers and documents, and dealing with banks and insurance companies.

After learning the basics of commodities trading, Dhirubhai begins speculating in high seas purchase and sales of all sorts of goods. The Shell oil refinery and the first oil harbour comes up in Aden in 1954. Besse & Co. become the agents for distribution of Shell refinery products. Due to his good performances at the office during his first five years, Dhirubhai is sent on promotion to the oil filling station at the newly built harbour.

In 1977, Reliance Co goes public.

Dhirubhai prefers capital markets over banks as the primary source of funding.

Dhirubhai is credited with starting the equity cult in India.

Reliance Hazira represented the single largest investment made by a private sector group in India at a single location.

RELIANCE REFINERY

Dhirubhai had firmed up plans of setting up a massive grassroots refinery - the next big leap in his overall strategic roadmap for Reliance. In 1999, Reliance completes the Jamnagar Refinery in 36 months which is also considered to be the worlds largest grassroots refinery. In 2002, Reliance made its first discovery of oil & gas in the KGD6 block, worlds largest gas discovery of that year.

March, 2000 : Indian Entrepreneur of the 20th Century award by FICCI, for his meticulous scripting of one of the most remarkable stories of business endeavour of the 20th Century. November, 2000 : Man of the Century award by Chemtech Foundation and Chemical Engineering World for his contribution to the growth and development of the Indian chemical industry . August, 20011 : The Economic Times Award for Corporate Excellence and Lifetime Achievement. February, 2002 : Conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award by India HRD Congress.

DEATH
Dhirubhai was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on June 24, 2002 after he suffered a major stroke. This was his second stroke, the first one had occurred in February 1986 and had kept his right hand paralyzed. He was in a state of coma for more than a week. He died on July 6, 2002, at around 11:50 pm.

SPLIT BETWEEN THE AMBANI BROTHERS


In November 2004, Mukesh Ambani in an interview, admitted to having differences with his brother Anil over 'ownership issues'. On June 18, 2005, Kokilaben Ambani announced the settlement through a press release. The Reliance empire was split between the Ambani brothers with Mukesh getting RIL and IPCL while Anil got Reliance Capital, Reliance Energy and Reliance Infocomm.

POPULAR IN MEDIA
A film alleged to be inspired by the life of Dhirubhai Ambani was released on 12 January 2007. Guru, directed by Mani Ratnam, shows the struggle of a man striving to make his mark in the Indian business world with a fictional Shakti Group of Industries. In 1998, a book published by Hamish McDonald titled The Polyester Prince is also an unauthorised biography of Dhirubhai Ambani, outlining all his political & business conquests.
