CHAPTER 3: PHYSICAL EDUCATION INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS

Management Guidelines for School Physical Education Program

The program should consist of variety of age-

appropriate activities
The program should provide a thorough understanding

of human body and the impact of physical activity on its various organic systems

The program should teach a variety of skills

progressively, eliminate excessive repetition of

activities and ensure the inclusion of lifetime sports

and health related fitness concepts
The program should encourage vigorous physical

activity in and outside of class, including individual physical fitness and participation in community, recreational.

Others consideration:
The physical education class provides the student with a

safe and wholesome environment in which to learn the skills, strategy, appreciation, understanding, knowledge, rules, regulations, and others material and information that are part of the program
Instruction should be fundamental and interesting Instruction should be progressive

Instruction should involve definite standards

Instruction should involve more than physical activity

There should be assessment and records There should be homework Each student should have a thorough medical

examination before participating in the physical education program

The teaching load of physical educators should be

determined not only by the number of instructional class periods assigned, but also by the total number of activities handled by the teacher both in class and outside of class

Management Guidelines for Selecting Instructional Aids and Materials

Materials should be selected and screened
Proper preparation of materials should be made The presentation of materials should be planned and

integrated into the lesson

Materials should be presented to the students in a

proper learning environment

Materials should be varied

Use of supplementary materials should be limited Care should be taken to avoid excessive expenses Records and evaluations should be maintained Others:

Reading materials
Audiovisual materials Special aids Professional personnel Clinic

Management Matters Related to PE Instructional Programs

Scheduling Physical education should not be inserted in the overall

master scheduling plan whenever there is time left over

after all the other subjects have been scheduled

Facility availability, equipment, supplies, weather, and

student interest and attention span should be taken into consideration when preparing a master scheduling plan

Important consideration in scheduling classes are:

The number of qualified teachers available

The number of teaching stations available

The number of students

Period and Block Scheduling

Divides the school year into terms (usually 4-9 week

terms per year); a student might enroll 4 or 5 classes

during each term that meet daily and are ninety

minutes in duration

Flexible and Modular Scheduling

Provides class periods of varying lengths,

depending on the course content being covered by the students, methods of instruction, and other factors pertinent to such a system
Dress Should be comfortable, safe and appropriate

Clothing should ensures safety when students are

engaged in physical activity

Time Allotment
The general consensus among physical education

leaders is that for physical education to be of value,

it must be offered with regularity
Daily or at least three times per week Suggested a double period It is recommended that sufficient time to be allotted

for dressing for participation in physical education activities

Class size Some schools combine various units or classrooms for

physical education, resulting in large classes that are not safe and provide a less than desirable teaching and learning environment
Class size is essential for effective teaching,

individualized instruction and optimal performance in physical education

It is recommended thirty students make up a class, with

enrollment never exceed thirty-five for one instructor

Instructional Loads and Staffing To maintain a high level of enthusiasm, vigor, and morale,

it is important that the load be fair and equitable so that physical educators can perform to their fullest potential
Recommended for full time physical education teacher

should be provided for every 190 secondary students

enrolled
Limit class instruction per teacher to five hours or

equivalent in class periods per day

Each teacher should have at least on preparation period

daily

Taking Roll
There are many methods of taking roll

Three criteria to be followed:

Efficient should not consume too much time

Accurate after class, it is important to know who

was present and who was not, as well as who came

late or left early

Uncomplicated should be easy to manage

Some methods for roll taking are:

Having numbers on the floor

Reciting numbers orally

Using a tag board Using a Delaney system Using the squad system Issuing towels and equipment Signing a book or register Calling the roll

Selecting Physical Education Activities

Physical education activities represent the core of the

program
The means for accomplishing objectives and achieving

educational goals

Criteria for selection: Activities should be selected in terms of the values

they have achieving in the objectives of physical

education and mission and vision of the school
Activities should be interesting, and challenging
Activities should be appropriate and adaptable to the

growth and developmental needs and interests of the

children, youth, and adults

Health and safety factors must be considered when

selecting activities
The local education philosophy, mission, policies, codes of

conduct, and school or college organization must be considered

School activities should provide situations similar to those

that children experience in natural play and competitive situations outside school
Activities selected should elicit appropriate social and

moral responses through high quality leadership and role modeling

Safety Considerations
Teachers must provide a safe environment in terms of

facilities, equipment, supervision, selection of age and

ability-appropriate activities, and an outline of proper procedures if an emergency should arise
Teacher should also responsible for thoroughly explaining

and demonstrating each activity, warning students of potential hazards, employing proper and progressive skill techniques, requiring appropriate and safe dress, and providing student supervision

Each student should have a thorough medical examination

by a qualified physician, physical educator should be aware of this health status

Safety policies and procedures should be posted in several

accessible and appropriate areas

Activity release and modified program forms, accident

forms, and return-to-activity clearance forms should all be standardized and maintained in department records
Teacher should be licensed and should maintain current

certification (examples: CPR, first aid etc.)
