The History of Punk Rock

Why it Began
In the 1960s and 70s, the music industry had control over the kind of music the public was listening to. Bands like The Stooges, The Velvet Underground and Patti Smith began to pave the road to a new form of music that was made from the politics of boredom.

A Genre is Born
In 1975, the Ramones released their debut album, The Ramones. The album was simple, original and aggressive, giving the Ramones the title Creators of Punk Rock

England Joins the Rebellion

The English punk rock scene started in 1977 when members of the future bands the The Clash, The Sex Pistols and others saw The Ramones play in London

The Sex Pistols Define Punk

Through their raw, fastpaced sound and fashionable looks, the Sex Pistols defined what it was to be punk. Their actions, both on and off stage, helped give the genre attitude, as songs like God Save the Queen quickly gained attention. The band was banned from playing in England because of the antimonarchical lines in the song.

Back in the U.S. of A

In the late 1970s, early 80s, the U.S. punk scene gets set in stone as California bands Bad Religion, the Dead Kennedys and Social Distortion begin their reign

Politics and Punk Rock

The Sex Pistols started down the political road with songs like Anarchy in the U.K and God Save the Queen. Since then, other punk bands, like Bad Religion, Green Day and Social Distortion, have joined the bandwagon, using their music to promote political and social views and ideas

Long Live Johnny Cash

Bands have evolved over the years from a hardcore punk band to a more melodic sounds. Some, like the rockabilly punk bands like Social Distortion and Tiger Army, owe thanks to the Man in Black

The Evolution of Punk

As the year 2004 closes to an end, punk has split into two categories: mainstream radio (Blink 182, Good Charlotte) and the good old fashion underground (The Explosion, Tiger Army).

Long Live Punk Rock!

Some say Punk is dead, that it died in the 1990s. But as long as bands like the Dead Kennedys, the Sex Pistols Social Distortion, Bad Religion, The Clash and The Ramones live on in the hearts of punk rockers, punk will live on forever
