The Green Agenda

The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behaviour that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself."

The First Global Revolution

Environmental awareness is considered to be the mark of any good honest decent citizen. Multi-national companies compete fiercely to promote their environmental credentials and 'out-green' each other. The threat of impending ecological disasters is uniting the world through a plethora of international treaties and conventions.

First Global Revolution

The environmental movement has been described as the largest and most influential social phenomenon in modern history. From relative obscurity just a few decades ago it has spawned thousands of organisations and claims millions of committed activists. Reading the newspaper today it is hard to imagine a time when global warming, resource depletion, environmental catastrophes and 'saving the planet' were barely mentioned. They now rank among the top priorities on the social, political and economic global agenda.

We are facing an imminent catastrophic ecological collapse" and "our only hope is to transform humanity into a global interdependent sustainable society, based on respect and reverence for the Earth."

Vision and Mission

The Green India Initiative aims to motivate Individuals and Organizations in supporting the green revolution in India by helping them implement renewable energy infrastructure. Solar energy and Wind energy help create a healthy environment for all, reducing one's carbon footprint in an efficient way. It is also an excellent tool for helping us achieve inclusive growth for the Indian economy.

Green India Initiative

Green India Initiative believes that renewable energy is the lifeblood of the future. When we just cannot keep depending on depleting fossil fuel resources with their ever increasing cost and also expect a strong economy. The modern economies as they grow depend increasingly on the integration of energy supply. Everything, from the car that we use for work to the stove that we use to cook dinner depend on fossil fuel based energy resource.

Cost Effective Resources

Unfortunately, the fossil fuels can never be infinite in their availability and we already see that the supply is dwindling. This in turn is driving costs sky high and is putting a strain on the large Indian middle class and as a result the whole Indian economy. On the plus side, this has generated a great deal of interest in solar, wind and other renewable resources all of which are now cost effective and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

Everyones Responsibility
The Initiatives which are focused on bringing sustainable technologies into the mainstream and help us become more energy independent have been implemented with the help of Corporates, Companies, NGOs, private agencies, individuals at large. Some of them are:

Godrej Good & Green

With a vision for brighter living developed a longterm vision for playing our part in creating a more inclusive and greener India. We have named this the Good & Green vision. By 2020 they aspire to do the following:

Ensuring Employability
India has 600 million people below the age of 25 out of which only 80 million (13%) are employable. The effort is going to be on skilling these people such that they become employable.
Goal: To train 1 million rural and urban youth in skilled employment to increase their wage earning potential.

Wonder how you can make your own contribution to conserve scarce and precious electricity? Godrej Appliances, one of Indias leading companies in home appliances shows you the way. The company recently flagged off its largest national consumer initiative One Watt Campaign -Lets Save a Billion Watts.

Greener India
For sustainable business, efforts will be focused on creating carbon neutral, zero waste, water positive and energy efficient businesses. Goal: To become carbon neutral and water positive, achieve zero waste to landfill, reduce specific energy consumption and increase our renewable energy sources. The Godrej Group has already been working on these goals as they are signatories to the CII code for Mission of Sustainable Growth (MSG) which is a 10point program for ecologically sustainable business growth.

Good & Green Products

A good product/ service addresses a critical issue for people living below the poverty line. The issue could be related to health, hygiene, water, sanitation, housing, education or livelihoods. A green product / service reduces energy, water or material consumption by 20%, GHG emissions by 20%, eliminates toxic materials or uses 100% recyclable, renewable and / or natural material. Goal: To have a third of our portfolio revenues comprise good and/or green products and services as products that are environmentally superior or address a critical social issue (e.g., health, sanitation, disease prevention) for consumers at the bottom of the income pyramid.
