INTRODUCTION
Transfer of learning is a phenomenon

of learning more quickly and

developing a deeper understanding
of the task which is most important
goal of education. Education
institutions want from the student to
gain knowledge and skill that they
can use both in the institutions and
out side.
3
CONTI…
 Therefore, it is stage wise learning from
one step to next step. It is important
for every individual to know about
transfer of learning for optimum
achievement. Transfer of learning is
innate instinct of human beings, used
in every day life without conscious
though. Transfer of learning also makes
the individuals more competent in term
of their cognitive capabilities and
psychomotor expertise.
4
OBJECTIVES
At the end of presentation the learners
will be able to:

 Define the Transfer of Learning

 Enlist the types of transfer of learning
 Explain the process of transfer of
learning.
 Discuss the performance factor and
barrier of transfer of learning
 Describe transfer and role of the teacher. 5
DEFINITION

 Transfer of learning is defined as

ensuring the knowledge and skills
acquired during a learning
intervention are applied to transfer
100% of their knowledge and skills
to their job.
(Hagman (1987)

6
TYPES OF TRANSFER OF LEARNING

1-Positive Transfer of Learning

When learning of transfer one task

facilitates or supports the learning
of other task it is called Positive
transfer of learning. e.g.
Mathematics helps in statistics.
7
2-Negative Transfer of Learning

When learning of transfer of one task

inhibits the learning of other task it is
called Negative transfer of learning.
e.g. Automatic transmission car and
manual transmission car. Left hand
driving car effect right hand driving
car.
8
3-Bilateral Transfer of Learning

The human body is divided in to two

laterals; right and left. When training
imparted to one lateral automatically
transfers to another lateral, we call it
bilateral transfer.

9
Bilateral TOL conti...

 It is our common experience that we

train our right hand in writing. The
training of right hand automatically
transfers to left hand. We can also
write with our left hand.

10
4.Near Transfer of Learning

 Near transfer of skills and knowledge

are applied the same way every time
the skills and knowledge are used.
Near transfer training usually
involves tasks that are procedural in
nature.
11
Near TOL conti...

 This type of transfer of learning is used

in nursing practice performing every
day nursing procedure like once we
learned how to give intramuscular
injection or catheterization, we always
adopt the same steps all the times.

12
5.Far Transfer of Learning

 Far transfer takes involve skills and

knowledge being applied in situations
that change Far transfer takes
require instruction where learners
are trained to adapt guidelines to
changing situations or environments.
13
PROCESS OF TRANSFER OF LEARNING

 An interrelated series of tasks

performed by supervisors, trainers,
learners and coworkers before, during
and after a learning intervention in
order to maximize transfer of
knowledge and skills and to improve
job performance
14
Before Learning
 Make action plan
 Design the learner support system
 Learning materials.
 Ensure problem can be “Fixed” with
training
 Select the “right” trainees
 Administrative support 15
During learning

 Provide ongoing support and

resources

 Match training activities to

intervention goals.

 Give learners the time to learn.

16
After Learning

 Evaluation

 Monitor learner progress

 Make adjustments as needed

17
FACTORS AFFECT TRANSFER OF LEARNING?

 Job Expectations.
 Performance feedback
 Physical Environment and tools
 Motivation
 Skills and Knowledge
 Organizational support
18
19
BARRIERS TO TRANSFERING
LEARNING?
 Lack of reinforcement on the job.
 Difficulties in the work environment.
 Non-supportive organizational
culture
 Learner’s perception that new skills
are impractical.
20
Conti…

 Learner’s discomfort with change.

 Separation from the instructional
source.
 Poor instructional design and delivery.
 Negative peer pressure.

21
TRANSFER AND ROLE OF TEACHER

 The teacher can help students in the

process of learning to a great extent if
he uses the following techniques in his
teaching. The teacher must keep in his
mind that transfer is not automatic but
requires effort on the part of the teacher
and learner.
22
Conti…

 Provide for a variety of example.

 Make sure that general principles are
understood.
 Mastery of sequential tasks.
 Use of discussion

23
Conti…
 It helps the teacher in creative
learning, because it facilitates the
teacher to modify herself.
 It facilitate teacher to enhance his
knowledge and skills.
 Near transfer of learning particularly
helps teacher to teach nursing
procedures to students. 24
Conti…
 Far transfer of learning prepare the
teacher to adopt new situations and be
able to teach students in new
circumstances, where may be some
deficiency of resources
 It will make the teacher more productive
within limited resources.

25
CONCLUSION
 Transfer of learning is effectively and
continuing applying the skills,
knowledge and attitudes that are
learned in the learning environment to
the job environments. Nurses learn
various skills in schools and apply them
in patient care.
26
Conti...
 Transfer of learning is equally important
for supervisor, trainers, learners and
co–workers in the best interest of
clients. Health care workers participate
in a learning event to acquire new
knowledge and skills to better meet to
needs of their client.
