Definition

The state of being free from illness or injury: "he was restored to health"; "a health risk".
A person's mental or physical condition. We are going to read this article BUT we are going to use a strategy called Reciprocal Reading. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/150999.ph p

Reciprocal Reading Strategy

Reciprocal reading is a way to share reading in a group. Each member of the group has a responsibility for a different aspect of reading the text.

The group roles are:

Summarizer

Questioner
Clarifier

Predictor

Predictor
You will tell the group what you think you will read about next. What is the writer/text going to say next? Preview the section and think about the main ideas (look at the text features, chapter questions, etc). Consider topics you think will be covered and key vocabulary you might expect to come across. Share your predictions first and then encourage all group members to add their predictions with reasons for them.

Summarizer
You will write a summary of the most important information from the reading. You need to be able to explain the reading in two or three sentences. Think about the main ideas and the most important details. Use the text features e.g. headings, bold print etc. to help you create a strong summary. Think like the writer and try to figure out what they wanted to tell you. The group can help you if you get stuck or if they think you forgot something.

Questioner
You will ask questions about the reading. You could ask on-the surface questions- who, what, when, or where. Or you could ask Under-thesurface questions- why, how, should, could, or would. Work with the group to decide where the answer to these questions might be in the reading, in the clues, in another source, or in the readers mind. Make sure the group attempts to answer all the questions.

Clarifier
You will first ask the group to help you clarify any words or ideas they did not understand.
You will then ask anyone in the group if they need any words or ideas clarified. Work with the group to determine meanings of unknown vocabulary or unclear ideas. Make sure the group feels comfortable asking for clarification. It is your job to ask the teacher to explain anything you are still not sure about.

First, we will practice

Prediction
Before you begin to read look at the title, scan the section, check for sub headings, look for pictures or diagrams. Now write down your predictions.

I predict this section will be an introduction I predict that the article will give us information about
different definitions of health.

I predict that the article will give us advice on how to

be healthy.

Summarize
As you finish reading section 1, identify the main ideas.

1. Health could mean physical health or mental

health.

2. You can use the word health in non-medical

contexts too.

3. The origins of the word are from words

meaning whole or undivided.

4. A medical dictionary defines health as being

free of disease or abnormality.

Question
Ask questions about what you have read? What doesnt it tell you?

What are the main differences between physical and

mental health?

Which is more important to look after? How do you stay healthy? What does good health look like? What does good health mean?

Clarify
Answer the questions posed if you can, or address any confusion or misunderstandings. Q: What is a Proto-Indo-European root? A: it is an old language from which other languages like English developed. Q: What do they mean by a healthy economy? A: They mean an economy or monetary (money) system that is doing well, profit not loss.

Now you try

Allocate a role to each member of the group.

Use the strategy to read paragraph 2.

Swap roles and apply the same technique to
paragraph 3.

Continue to work through the article, swapping

roles at each paragraph.

Inquiry based final assessment

During this semester you will be assessed on your skills in questioning, research and presentation. This will take the form of an inquiry on an aspect of health chosen by you. It can be anything you have previously studied in Health class or a health topic you find interesting or important.

The first assignment will be the inquiry question so you should start by considering your topic.

Choosing a topic
In your groups read through the standards for health
education.

Consider the following questions 1. Which topics are the most important? 2. Which topics are the most interesting? 3. Which topics would you like to find out more about?

4. Which topics would have the most information

available?

Homework
By tomorrow choose a topic
to research.

We will work on the inquiry

question during the lesson tomorrow.

Plenary
Did we reach our aims? By the end of this lesson you will have learnt:

What is meant by health and good health. How to use the reciprocal reading strategy. How to set up a blog using blogger. What is an inquiry based final assessment.
