What is concrete?

Concrete is most widely used man made construction material it is obtained by mixing cementing material ,water, and aggregates and some admixtures in required proportion.

Concrete is Made By Mixing of Cement

Water Coarse and Fine Aggregates Admixtures

CEMENT
Cement powder, when mixed with water, forms a paste. This paste acts like glue and holds or bonds the aggregates together.

WATER
WATER

is mixed with the cement powder to form a paste which Holds the aggregate together like glue. Water must be clean, fresh and free from any dirt, unwanted chemicals or rubbish that may affect concrete. Many concrete plants now use recycled water.

AGGREGATES
AGGREGATES are of two basic types:
COARSE: crushed rock, gravel or screenings. FINE:

fine and coarse sands and crusher

fines. Sand should be concreting sand and not bricks sand or plasterers sand.

ADMIXTURES
ADMIXTURES are mixed into the

concrete to change or alter its properties, i.e. the time concrete takes to set and harden, or its workability.

Strength & durability of concrete depends upon : The properties of its ingredients

Curing Concrete
holding water in the concrete Will: Increase concrete strength Increase concrete abrasion resistance Lessen the chance of concrete scaling Lessen the chance of surface dusting Lessen the chance of concrete cracking

Curing of Concrete Blocks

NEED OF CURING
If the surface of the concrete can dry out before the concrete is sufficiently hardened: the surface can shrink and crack (plastic cracking) hydration (hardening) can cease prematurely carbonation can occur which can lead to steel reinforcement corrosion later as well as preventing still-fresh concrete being rewetted; the surface can be weak.

TYPES OF CURING

WATER CURING.
MEMBRANE CURING.

Water curing

Types of water curing

-sprinkling. -wet covering. -ponding.

Membrane curing.

Types of Membrane Curing -retention of formwork

-plastic sheeting.

ADVANTAGES OF CURING
Gains strength

Yields Micro-cracks
Releases high heat of

hydration
