Pressure Reducing Valve

Pressure Reducing valve
The pressures in the primary circuit and secondary circuit are 5,000 psi.

In the hydraulic system, if setting pressure of relief valve is 5,000 psi.

5,000 psi.
5,000 psi.

Set at 5,000 psi.

How we can limit a secondary circuit pressure to lower than the relief setting ?

Pressure Reducing Valve

If we used the normally open valve, allowing oil entry to the secondary circuit.

Pressure Reducing valve Then we can limit a secondary circuit to a pressure lower than the main relief valve setting

Set at 3,000 psi

5,000 psi. 3,000 psi.

Pressure of secondary circuit directly oppose to the spring Set at 5,000 psi.

The valve senses the pressure level in the secondary circuit and tends to close, orificing the oil entering the secondary circuit.

Direct operated Reducing valve

1. Outlet pressure is sensed on this area of the spool.

3. When the pressure is high enough to push the spool

4. This orifice is made smaller, which adds resistance to flow.

2. and works against the spring.

5. which reduces the pressure in the secondary circuit.

Direct operated Reducing valve

An increase in load, or leakage across the reducing valve spool, could increase the pressure in the secondary circuit higher than is desired. 3. When secondary system pressure shifts the spool to this position.

A third port must be provided to rid the leakage of oil or reverse flow the actuator.

2. is relieved to tank through the spring chamber

1. Over pressure in the secondary circuit

Pilot operated Reducing valve 2. since increased spring force, with increased displacement ,

1. Consequently, pilot operated reducing valves must be used for higher flow rate, Pilot valve Spring

1. Assuming our load must be moved with limited force

2. Load induced pressure. 4. Under imbalanced pressure conditions, the spool moves upward.

5. This orifice opens and closed.

7. Enough to keep secondary pressure at valve setting.

6. so that primary pressure here is restricted.

2. The pilot circuit must remain open

3. To maintain the imbalance on the main spool.

5. Which must be supply from the primary circuit.

1. When no more oil can enter this cylinder 6. Through a small orifice position of the main spool. 4. This necessitates a pilot oil flow of 1/4 to 1/3 gpm

Pressure Reducing Valve

The reducing valve allow a free flow in the reverse direction. But in some circuit you cannot safely assume that the valve will always remain open.

Pilot operated Reducing valve 3. a 10 GPM flow here.

2. is twice as large as this area..

1. If this area.

5. Even if the pilot remains closed and the pressures are balanced above and below the main spool.

4. Produce 20 GPM flow here

6. The high flow force can cause the spool to close.

Symbol of Pressure Reducing valve

1. Symbol for reducing valve are similar to those of relief valves, except for two major changes. 3. Second, in the reducing valve symbol, the pilot line works against its control spool by sensing outlet pressure.

2. First, the reducing valve is normally open, the flow arrow is in line with the inlet and out let ports to the square box.
