Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing

Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing (CSST) is a type of conduit used for natural gas heating in homes. It was introduced in the United States in 1988. CSST consists of a continuous, flexible stainless-steel pipe with an exterior PVC covering. The piping is produced in coils that are air-tested for leaks.
CSST was invented in 1988, and gained approval for use in all commercial and residential installations throughout the United States in 2003. Since then, CSST has quickly gained in popularity, and is estimated to be used in more than half of all new homes built today.

How to identify CSST ?

CSST looks similar to a gas connector, but is easily distinguished by a flexible yellow pvc jacket on the outside. Gas connectors will often have a coating on the outside not a jacket. CSST will also be identified as such on the jacket itself.

Advantages of Corrugated stainless steel tube

Twenty years ago, the American National Standards Institute published the first CSST product standardANSI LC 1. Since then, over 750 million feet of CSST have been installed in over five million homes in North America. CSST piping ensures safety and success thanks to: Flexibility that allows it to snake easily through wall studs, under floors, in long continuous runs, and around obstacles. Light weight that makes it easier to handle and install. A complete system for an entire house can fit into a small vehicle. Up to 75% fewer fittings are required for the average installation, compared to black iron pipe. That means much faster installations and much less potential for leaks. Labor savings as reported by the Gas Research Institute that can range from 24% to 66% on new construction projects, up to a whopping 72% on rehab jobs. Simple hand tools are all that's needed. The learning curve is very short. The multiport manifold offers easy future expansion capabilities for gas logs, spa or room additions. Unused ports are simply capped at the time of installation and used later as the need arises. Higher load capacity accommodates additions. Every foot of piping is marked for easy measurement and tracking of material costs. Tight quality assurance includes 100% testing of every spool of CSST before it leaves the factory.

With over 750 million feet installed in over 5 million homes, CSST has an outstanding safety record. When you compare CSST to black iron pipe, it is clear that the safest and best gas piping choice is a CSST system.

Disadvantages of CSST
The major drawback of CSST is causing fire due to lightening. Csst is much more expensive than black iron pipe and copper pipe.

Hangers

For attachment to the CSST gas piping system, a single bonding clamp must be attached to either a segment of steel pipe, a rigid pipe component or to the Gastite brass hex fitting. For attachment to a segment of steel pipe or a rigid pipe component any bonding clamp listed to UL467 may be used
