Volcanoes
Volcanoes are mountains that open in

Earths surface
They are usually located where tectonic

plates meet. This can be in a variety of locations like the ocean floor, under icecaps, and even on other planets!
Volcanoes can vary in size and shape.

While most of them have a cone shape and look like a mountain, others have cracks, plateaus, and a dome shape.

Volcano Terms
Magma is the molten rock that is under the

Earth. It is light enough to rise up through cracks in Earths crust.


Lava is magma after it has erupted. Lava, ash,

and gas can come out of an erupting volcano.


When a volcano is active, that means that it

erupts regularly.
When a volcano is dormant, that means that it

erupted in the past but does not erupt anymore.

Famous Volcanoes
Mt. Saint Helens is located in Washington

State and erupted in 1980.


Mt. Vesuvius is located in Italy and is known

for destroying the city of Pompeii.


Mt. Fuji is located in Japan and is a really well

known landmark of the country.


Kilauea is located in Hawaii and erupts almost

every year.

Kilauea is on Hawaiis Big Island other volcanoes that

are some of the most active in the world.


It is the youngest volcano in Hawaii and is one of the

largest active craters.


A legend says that Hawaii is home to a Hawaiian

volcano goddess named Pele. Pele created volcanoes and made the bottom of Kilauea her final resting place when she died.
