Mothers Knowledge of Intestinal worm infestations

Need for the study


Global estimates-more than half of the total population( 3.5billion) are affected from parasitic infections, among them 450 million become ill, the majority being children. Worm infestation is one of the major causes of childhood malnutrition.

Statement of the problem


A study to assess the mothers knowledge regarding intestinal worm infestations at selected urban community in sriram-nagar, Hyderabad.

Objectives
To assess knowledge of selected mothers regarding IWI. To compare the knowledge of selected mothers regarding IWI with selected variables.

To prepare an health education module on care, prevention and control of common IWI.

METHODOLOGY
DESIGN: Descriptive study Sample: convenient sampling Sample size: 100 Poupulation: mothers from sriram nagar, urban community

Inclusion criteria
Mothers were in reproductive age of 15-45 yrs Mothers with Children upto 10 years Speak and understand telugu, english, hindi

Instrument
Structured interview questionnaire PART-A: demographic datas PART-B: 43 items divided into four sections

Part-A
Mothers age Religion Education Occupation Income of the family Total number of the family

Part-B
43 items 1-20: mothers knowledge related to IWI 21-28: related to personal hygiene 29-36: related to cooking practices 37-43: related to environmental sanitation

Data analysis
Descriptive and inferential statistics-data Correlation- relation between mothers knowledge and demographic variables

Results
Religious- 50% were hindus 30% christins 15% were muslims Education- 28% illiterate 24% upto 7th class 25% upto 10th class 12% were intermediate 7% degree 4% post graduate

Occupation: house wives 56% Self-employees 30% Employees 12% Income: 9%- Rs.3000-4000 37%-Rs.4000-5000 34%- Rs.5000-6000 20%-less than 60000

Discussion
No relation between knowledge and age Region, education, occupation, family income and knowledge were highly significant.

Conclusion
Majority of mothers have below and average knowledge levels 46%- below average 48%- average 6%-above average

Similar study can be conducted to detect prevalence of IWI on large samples. An experimental study- to see effectiveness of module on mothers knowledge

Implications

Health services needed to be improved through in service education to health workers Health education to mothers regarding prevention of IWI.
