ABSTRACT

This Paper investigates the performance of STATCOM to an existing power transmission line for better utility.

A closed control algorithm across transmission is developed for shunt compensation for power factor improvement. Such as power factor at the generating station is maintained unity.

Accordingly control circuits where designed and verified using MATLAB simulation and the results were Presented.

LITERATURE SURVEY
1970s, power electronics-based control for reactive compensation was implemented. The desire to find solutions to these problems and limitations have led to focused technological developments under the Flexible AC Transmission systems(FACTS)(Hingorani, 1988; Gyugyi, 1992; Hingorani, 1993; Hingorani and Gyugyi,1998; Song and Johns, 1998; Zelinger et al., 2000). However, very little work has been done related to the application of D-STATCOM to isolated systems. A number of control schemes like instantaneous reactive power theory Akagi et al., 1984), power balance theory and indirect current control scheme (Singhet al., 2000ab) have been used for DSTATCOM.

Contd
Some attempts have also been made to carry out simulation of DSTATCOM and other FACTS devices using standard simulation packages like PSCAD, EMTDC, MATLAB etc. (Lara and Acha,2002; Giroux et al., 2001;
The distribution static compensator (D-STATCOM) is a key controller, and it utilises power electronics to solve many power quality problems commonly faced by distribution systems. Potential applications of D-STATCOM include power factor correction, voltage regulation, load balancing and harmonic reduction (Ghosh and Ledwich 2002).

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this paper is to provide proper reactive power compensation and to maintain active power balance of an existing transmission system. More over power factor correction at generator side and load compensation at load side and harmonic reductions is possible indirectly

INTRODUCTION
The reactive power compensator based on voltage source inverter such as STATCOM are used in several power applications - due to their fast response, flexibility, and effective control But still VSI is having some draw backs during unbalanced conditions indeed for VSI`s switching at low frequency with stationary reference frame do not provide enough bandwidth.

This can be achieved by the proposed d-q regulators which gives satisfactory performance in terms of reference tracking.

STATCOM
The STATCOM (static synchronous compensator ) is a shunt connected reactive power compensation device that is capable of generating and/or absorbing reactive power.

BLOCK DIAGRAM

Transmission line distance between the generator and the load is 100km.

PI controller is used to compensate the reactive power at generating side for active power flow existing in the transmission line.

Here the phase angle between the voltage and current is in phase with each other to improve the power factor improvement. Waveform at phase angle of o degree is shown. Also shown at phase angle of 180 degree for comparing power flow existing in the
transmission line.

CONCLUSION
From the simulation results it is concluded that reactive power is compensated and also active power is balanced. The performance of the STATCOM along with closed loop controlling technique is verified using simulation And further work can be expanded to the modern UPFC and FACTS.
