Environmental Management Systems Certification


IS/ISO 14001:2004 should be implemented to demonstrate the organization's capability for
compliance/conformity to the legislative and regulatory requirements, protection of the environment, prevention of pollution and for continual improvement in environmental performance.

EMS provides a structured process for the achievement of continual improvement, the rate and extent of which will be determined by the organization in the light of socio-economic and other circumstances.

Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS)


IS 18001:2000 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems.
This standard prescribes requirements for an OH&S Management Systems to enable an organization to formulate a policy and objectives, taking into account legislative requirements and information about significant hazards and risks, which the organization can control and over which it can be expected to have an influence, to protect its employees and others, whose health and safety may be affected by the activities of the organization.

Food Safety Management Systems Certification Scheme


BIS has launched Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) Certification IS/ISO 22000:2005 scheme which envisages grant of FSMS Certification licence to organizations according to IS/ISO 22000. FSMS for Safe Food Supply Chains Highlights of IS/ISO 22000:2005
Integrates Hazards Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) system. Requires that all possible hazards be identified, assessed & controlled. Can be applied independent of other management system standards or can be integrated with existing other management system. Provides for management of potential emergency situations & accidents that can impact food safety.

Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP)


Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) is a process control system designed to identify and prevent microbial and other hazards in food production. It includes steps designed to prevent problems before they occur and to correct deviations as soon as they are detected. HACCP involves a system approach to identification of hazard, assessment of chances of occurrence of hazards during each phase, raw material procurement, manufacturing, distribution, usage of food products, and in defining the measures for hazard control. HACCP enables the producers, processors, distributors, exporters, etc, of food products to utilize technical resources efficiently and in a cost effective manner in assuring food safety.

HACCP Certification

BIS offers two Certification schemes to the food industry.


i) HACCP Stand-alone Certification against IS 15000:1998 ii) HACCP based Quality System Certification provides for two Certification through one audit Certification of Quality System against IS/ISO 9000 and Certification of HACCP against IS 15000:1998

Service Quality Management Systems Certification Scheme (SQMSCS)


BIS is operating Service Quality Management Systems Certification Scheme (SQMSCS) for public service organizations according to IS 15700:2005 as one of its Schemes under Management Systems Certification. IS 15700:2005 may be implemented by public service organizations to demonstrate their ability to consistently provide effective and efficient services which meets customer and applicable legal, statutory and regulatory requirements, to enhance customer satisfaction and for continual improvement in their services and service delivery processes.

SQMSCS (Contd.)
This standard provides emphasis on `citizen focus and includes following three key elements:
Formulation of a realistic Citizens Charter through a consultative process Identification of services rendered, Service delivery processes, their control and delivery requirements An effective process for complaints handling

Who are eligible


Public service organizations including Government Ministries and Departments, Regulatory Bodies, Public Utility Service Provider, etc, which are either directly providing service to society at large or those which through their policies, directives, regulations, etc, indirectly affect the services being provided by these service providers, are eligible for certification under this scheme.

Information Security Management System Certification


Information Security Management System Certification (ISMS based on ISO/IEC 27001) ISO/IEC 27001 formally specifies a management system that is intended to bring information security under explicit management control. ISO/IEC 27001 requires that management:
Systematically examine the organization's information security risks, taking account of the threats, vulnerabilities and impacts; Design and implement a coherent and comprehensive suite of information security controls and/or other forms of risk treatment (such as risk avoidance or risk transfer) to address those risks that are deemed unacceptable; and Adopt an overarching management process to ensure that the information security controls continue to meet the organization's information security needs on an ongoing basis.

BIS Certification Scheme for Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery


The principle objectives of the Hallmarking Scheme are to protect the public against the fraud of adulteration and to oblige manufacturers to maintain legal standards of fineness. Hallmarking is the accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in gold. BIS Precious Metals Sectional Committee (MTD 10) has formulated and published the following Indian Standards on Gold and Gold Alloys:
IS 1417 Grades of gold and gold alloys, Jewellery/Artefacts-Fineness and Marking IS 1418 Assaying of Gold in Gold Bullion, Gold alloys and Gold Jewellery/ Artefacts - Cupellation (Fire Assay Method) IS 2790 Guidelines for manufacture of 23,22,21,18,14 and 9 carat gold alloys IS 3095 Gold Solders for use in manufacture of Jewellery

Brief of Certification procedure for Foreign Manufacturers


In this scheme, a licence can be granted for any product against an Indian Standard specifying product characteristics, which is amenable to certification. The scheme operates on self-certification basis, whereby the manufacturer is permitted to apply the Standard Mark on the product after ascertaining its conformity to the Indian Standard licenced for.
