Photo Red Light Enforcement Program

History
VA Code enacted 1995 for 10-year pilot program City of Fairfax program began August 1997

First municipality in VA to implement photo red light enforcement


8 intersections enforced

VA General Assembly allowed the pilot program to expire in July 2005

Current Situation
Current VA code enacted July 2007 - 15.2-968.1. Section A City may use photo red enforcement at no more than 10 intersections Section C all violations must be approved by a sworn law enforcement officer

2007 VA Code required VDOT approval of all photo red installations. Requirement was eliminated during the 2012 General Assembly.
Vendor: Redflex Traffic Systems, Inc. City currently operates 4 cameras at 3 intersections

Since Aug 1, 2011: Reviewed 22,277 possible violations Approved 20,525 92% issuance rate Court contested violations: 0.5% Approximately 7% City Residents
