General Adaptation Syndrome Physiologists define stress as how the body reacts to a stressor, real or imagined, a stimulus that causes stress. Acute stressors affect an organism in the short term; chronic stressors over the longer term.

General Adaptation Syndrome
Alarm is the first stage. When the threat or stressor is identified or realized, the body's stress response is in a state of alarm. During this stage, adrenaline will be produced in order to bring about the fight-or-flight response. The organism's resistance to the stressor drops temporarily below the normal range and some level of shock may be experienced. There is also some activation of the HPA axis, producing cortisol. Resistance is the second stage. If the stressor persists, it becomes necessary to attempt some means of coping with the stress. Although the body begins to try to adapt to the strains or demands of the environment, the body cannot keep this up indefinitely, so its resources are gradually depleted. Exhaustion is the third and final stage in the GAS model. At this point, all of the body's resources are eventually depleted and the body is unable to maintain normal function. The initial autonomic nervous system symptoms may reappear (sweating, raised heart rate, etc.). If stage three is extended, long-term damage may result, as the body's immune system becomes exhausted, and bodily functions become impaired, resulting in decompensation. The result can manifest itself in obvious illnesses such as ulcers, depression, diabetes, trouble with the digestive system, or even cardiovascular problems, along with other mental illnesses.

Many attribute various diseases to GENETIC factors, but there is always a space between Stimulus and Response. When people are aware of this space and aware of their own capacity to make choices based on principles, they dont necessarily get the disease of their genetic predisposition.

It is very important to have frequent checkups, at least annually, so that various disease tendencies or symptoms can yield to wise choices. We must take full responsibility of our own health.

Think about what happens to the other three dimensions when the body is neglected. We can lose not only our health but mentally we can also lose our focus, our creativity, our endurance, our toughness, our courage, our learning capacity, our retention. To the contrary, when we exercise, rest and eat properly, we retain our mental focus and toughness, as well as our thirst for learning.

What happens to our emotional intelligence, to our heart, when we neglect our bodies? Patient, love, understanding, empathy, the ability to listen and compassion are themselves subordinated they become buzzwords without flesh and blood to drive them.

It affects our desire to serve, to contribute, our willingness to sacrifice, to subordinate ourselves for a higher good; our conscience becomes dulled, yielding to almost any temptation. Any loss of personal integrity makes me more self-oriented, more selfish.

Physical Self-Mastery and Development Is foundational Very concrete, something we can immediately do something about We can control it and have direct access to it Most people acknowledge they get off the track from time to time. But if they will sincerely LISTEN to the FEEDBACK of their body, mind, heart and spirit and make necessary changes, they can get back on track.

Conscience If we will just listen to it, this will direct us in all 3 of these areas. The more we follows it, the stronger it becomes, so that he can move more and more toward giving of himself.
