Questionnaire design

Definition Questionnaire :- A structured technique for data collection that consists of series of questions , written that a respondent answer. OR Questionnaire:- A schedule containing various items on which information is sought from respondents.

Objectives of Questionnaire
It must translate the information needed into set of specific questions that the respondents can and will answer. A questionnaire must uplift, motivate and encourage the respondent to become involved in the interview , to cooperate and complete the interview. A questionnaire should minimize response error.

Determine what information is needed. What type of questionnaire to be used. Decide on the type of questions. Decide on the wordings of questions. Deciding on the layout. Pre test. Revise and prepare final questionnaire.

Determine what information is needed

Helpful to review components of a problem and the approach Research project progress when information needed becomes more & more clearly defined. To ensure that information obtained fully addresses all the components of problem. Researcher should prepare dummy tables. Have a clear idea of target population.

What type of questionnaire to be used

Different types of questionnaire:

Types of questions
What to include in individual question? Is the question necessary? It Should contribute to the information needed and serve some specific purpose Are several questions needed instead of one? Some questions are needed to obtain the required information in an unambiguous manner

Wordings of questions
Wordings of particular question could have a large impact on how the respondents interprets them. Eg. Instead of using the word reasonably usually, occasionally, generally you can use how often . Avoid double barreled question Avoid leading question Avoid loading question

Sequence and layout

Divide the questionnaire into three parts: basic information classification identification information Format, Spacing and Positioning. Numbering.

Pre testing
It is done to detect any flaws that might be present. Small sample size. Aspects considered: Question content, wording, spacing, form & layout, Question difficulty & instructions.

Revise and preparation of final questionnaire

Final questionnaire must be prepared after pre testing the questionnaire with the small group of respondents. Questionnaire should be revised for the following:
To correct the spelling To place the questions in proper order To remove the words which are not familiar to respondents.
