WHY THIS PROJECT ..

the climate change is affecting various aspects of the human lives and ecology;
water resources is among the most vulnerable sectors to be affected by the climate change; there is a lot of variation in the findings about the impacts by the different agencies at each level ie. global level as well as regional/national level; and

there is a strong need to take up the studies at basin level and at project level backed by long term related observed data.

THE HYDROLOGICAL CYCLE..

the climate change is likely to affect the hydrological cycle, which will result in
more rainfall in lesser time; decrease in number of rainy days;

overall increase in precipitation;

increased glacial melt-runoff initially and then afterwards decrease; increase in runoff but less ground water recharge?;

increase in flood events particularly of flash floods;

increase in drought like situations; and some other related issues like increase in landslide events in hilly areas etc.

PONNANIAR RESERVOIR PROJECT ..

Ponnaniar reservoir is situated in Mogavanur village of Manaparai Taluk across river Ponnaniar river. (78 deg 16min and 10 deg 34 min) The reservoir is located in between Semmalai hills and Perumal malai hills. Ponnaniar river is one of the three tributaries to Ariyar river and it carries large discharge during the monsoon period and empties into river Cauvery.

WHAT WE ARE ASSIGNED ..

model the hydrology of the Ponnaniar Reservoir system for understanding the impact of Climate change in Water Resources
Develop a Geographical Information System and site specific models to be embedded in the GIS. ensure correct quantum of water delivery by installing watermeasuring structures in the entire system. form Water Users Association in the command area.

build the adaptive capacity and disseminate the knowledge to the WUAs.
coordinate with TNAU in implementing climate change adaptation technologies and up-scaling the findings from ClimaRice.
