Meaning
Data Warehouse:
A subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, nonvolatile collection of data used in support of management decision-making processes Subject-oriented: e.g. customers, patients, students, products Integrated: Consistent naming conventions, formats, encoding structures; from multiple data sources Time-variant: Can study trends and changes Non-volatile: Read-only, periodically refreshed
BENEFITS
Potential high returns on investment Competitive advantage Increased productivity More cost-effective decision making Better enterprise intelligence
Problems
Underestimation of resources of data loading Hidden problems with source systems Required data not captured Increased end-user demands Data homogenization
High demand for resources Data ownership High maintenance Long-duration projects Complexity of integration
OLAP
Online analytical transaction processing (OLAP) OLTP systems are designed to maximize the transaction processing capacity. Used in clerical data processing tasks, structured repetitive, read/update a few records. Based on operational systems.
Load manager
It is responsible for collection of data from operational systems and convert them into usable form. Performs following tasks
Identification of data. Validation of data about the accuracy. Extraction of data from original source. Data formatting. Data standardization by getting them into a consistent form.
ARCHITECTURE
Load Manager Query Manager
Warehouse manager
It is the center of data-warehousing system and is the data warehouse itself. Data in it is organized such that it become easy to find, use and update.
Query manager
It provides the end-users with access to the stored warehouse information through the use of specialized end-user tools. Data mining access tools have various categories such as: Query and reporting On-line analytical processing (OLAP) Graphical and Geographical information system.
