WHAT IS LEADERSHIP

: Leadership is an interpersonal influence directed toward the achievement of a goal or goals. LEADERSHIP is a dynamic relationship based on mutual influence and common purpose between leaders and collaborators in which both are moved to higher levels of motivation and moral development as they affect real, intended change. Southwest Airlines' Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success, Bard Press, 1996, p. 298) Leading is establishing direction and influencing others to follow that direction.

POLITICAL LEADER

Nitish kuma

INTRODUCTION
Nitish Kumr was born in Nalanda. He has a degree in electrical engineering from the Bihar College of Engineering, Patna He learnt the lessons of politics under the tutelage of stalwarts Jayaprakash Narayan, Ram Manohar Lohia, Karpoori Thakur, S N Sinha, George Fernandes and V. P. Singh.

He was first elected to the Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1985 as an independent candidate. In 1989, he became the Secretary-General of the Janata Dal in Bihar. He was also elected to Lok Sabha the same year. Nitish was aligned with Laloo Prasad Yadav for years before they parted ways and Janata Dal (United) came into existence in 2003. 1st Term (3 March 2000 10 March 2000) 2nd Term (24 November 2005 24 November 2010) 3rd Term (26 November 2010 to present)

SITUATION

Bihar was facing de-growth. During the Lalu-Rabri rule Bihar had become synonymous with kidnappings & killings. The drop out rate of girl students had gone up to 25 lakh. Business units were not ready to come to Bihar.

LEADERSHIP DECISIONS

He focussed on two key areas- the law & order situation & infrastructure. His tight grip on the police departement ensured that the law of the land was gradually implemented. Speedy trial of criminal cases along with selection of police officers on merit instilled confidence in the public. If the year 2004-05, saw the construction of a merly 318 kilometers of road, in 2008-09 nearly 2500 kilometers of road was constructed.

The state saw construction on 316 flyovers between 1975 and 2004 but from the time Nitish took over, 400 flyovers have been constructed. The other major achievement of Kumar was embarking on the mission to empower the women of the state. The government provides free uniform and cycle to girl students above class 8th. The drop out rate of girl students has come down from 25 lakh to 10 lakh

The latest data released by the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) shows that Bihar has grown at a stunning rate of 11.03% in the last five years. "Nitish Kumar has demonstrated that the best leaders can overcome the worst circumstances," said Bill Gates. The leading business financial daily,The Economic Times awarded Kumar the prestigious reformer of the year award recognizing his good work that is changing the fortunes of Bihar.

Rajiv Baja

INTRODUCTION
Rajivnayan Bajaj was born on December 21, 1966. Masters degree with distinction in manufacturing systems engineering, from the University of Warwick, U.K. He started his career in 1990 at the firm that his father, Rahul Bajaj managed for over three decades.

SITUATION

Shift of Consumer preference towards motorcycle.

Bajaj Autos motorcycle manufacturing cost was too high, the quality of product was poor. Their production was 80% scooters. Fuel efficiency in bikes were too less than other bikes with Japanese engines.

LEADERSHIP DECISIONS
Rajiv Bajaj decided not to chase Hero Honda instead he though to make a motorcycle which seems impossible for Bajaj to produce that time. Rajiv Bajaj started implementing new changes. He introduced Streamlined Manufacturing Systems (SMS) to enhance production quality and productivity. He introduced new R&D team,who were given freedom to work and develop a new bike.

Stopped the production of scooters. All these effort resulted in a motorcycle called Pulsar which is the icon of performance brand in India today.

The most important change Rajiv did in marketing was the Definitely male tag.
