Welcome, students and parents!
Welcome to Grade 5!
• I will introduce you
to fifth grade and to
our classroom.
• If you have any
questions during my
presentation, please
raise your hand.
All About Me
• My background
• I grew up in Portsmouth.
• I attended, Portsmouth High, and St. Michael’s
College in Vermont & received my teaching
certificate from UMass Dartmouth. In 2006 I
achieved National Board Certification.
• My experience
• I’ve been teaching for 27 years.
• I have also taught K, fifth and sixth grades, but so
far, fifth is my favorite.
My Goals
• To give my students the academic and
social skills they need to progress to
sixth grade.
• To provide a supportive and fun
classroom environment.
• To help my students make new friends
and discover new interests.
Class Subjects
• The subjects we cover during fifth
grade are RI state Grade 5 GLEs
related to:
• Mathematics
• Reading
• Writing
Reading
• We are beginning our year by
reading and studying the writings
of award winning author Jerry
Spinelli and his book Maniac
Magee.
• Students read for 15-20 minutes
silently everyday and students
promise to read at home every
night for 15 – 20 minutes.
• By working together, we will
ensure that all students reach the
state expectation of reading and
responding to 25 pieces of
different types of literature by the
end of the school year.
Writing

• Students will learn different styles of


writing:

• Fictional and non-fictional essays


• Summaries
• Narrative writing
• Letter writing
• Persuasive essays
• Poetry writing (Poetry Slam online in the
spring)
• Mystery essays
Math
• Students are busy
studying for the state
NECAP test which is
scheduled for mid-
October. Students can
study at home and in
class by visiting:

Classroom Community
• Our classroom is a community. I have recently been
trained in Open Circle and we have begun our
journey into becoming a classroom community. We
have rules to help us get along with each other.
• Our class rules are:
• Be respectful and responsible.
• Be organized and follow directions.
• Be on time.
• Be prepared.
• Be honest and trustworthy
Homework
• I will assign about 30 minutes of homework
every night. 15-20 minutes of math and 15
-20 minutes of reading.
• If you need to know the homework assigned
for the day, look in your child’s Planner. At
Schoolnotes.com you will find a overview of
the projects and lessons we are covering in
class.
Field Trips
• We have lots of fun field trips planned for this
year!
• We will attend two plays at the Children’s Theater
as part of our reading units.
• We will visit Maple Grove park and take water
samples from the river as part of our science unit
on the environment.
• We will tour a bakery as part of our social studies
unit on community.
