Project management
Project management is the discipline of organizing and managing resources (e.g. people) in such a way that the project is completed within defined: scope quality time and cost constraints
Projects vs processes
Projects Building new student centre Refurb of Prince Edward Hall Drug discovery projects Research projects Processes Running exams Admissions Drug safety monitoring Managing Pharmacy shop
n.b. projects have specific time limits, processes are open-ended ongoing activities
People Management
To enable their people to do what is required, team leaders should:
Make sure that everyone understands what to do. Ensure that each team member has access to all the resources needed to complete assignments Use mid-assignment check-ins with all team members to keep morale high and keep problems from growing out of control Be on virtual 24-hour call to support their team members Use positive reinforcement: rewards and thank-yous should be plentiful
Lao-tzu on Leadership
The Chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu, described his view of team leadership with these thoughts: As for the best leaders, the people do not notice their existence. The next best, people honor and praise. The next, the people fear; and the next, the people hate. When the best leaders work is done, the people say, We did it ourselves. Lao-tzu
