QUESTION

Answer
No. Childrens cognitive development varies in different individual.

WHY??
1.

The stages in Piagets theory is overly simplified. Based on the stages, children can achieve ability in conversion. Research has proved that children can be taught certain concept before they enter certain stage.

2. Assumptions made by Piaget are incorrect Piaget underestimates childrens intellectual abilities they are actually more capable than Piagets assumption. Children are also socially competent and are not as egocentric as Piaget claimed.

3. Childrens cultural and social background are overlooked. Piagets theory is based on western views and culture. Different children in different cultures learn differently and their learning is based on their cultural expectation.

4. Unscientific methods Piaget did not meet the criterion of doing a research use his own child. His work is characterized as lack of controls, inadequate samples, absence of statistical analysis in his research. He theorized too much based on his too little evidence.

1. McGarrigle and Donalson (1974) Children already know and understand the conversation in their young age. 2. Balillargeon and De Vos (1991) Not all children achieve formal operational stage even their age is 11-16 years old. 3. Bradmetz (1999) Mostly children achieve formal operational at the end of their childhood/teenagers (18-19 years)
