WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO US? STEPS to be taken:1. Define why your organization is in business. 2. Determine the key processes that state 'what' you do. 3. Establish how these processes work within your business. 4. Determine who owns these processes. 5. Agree these processes throughout the organization.

AUDITING
Types of Auditing:
Internal Audit External Audit Under the 1994 standard, the auditing process could be adequately addressed by performing "compliance auditing" Tell me what you do (describe the business process) Show me where it says that (reference the procedure manuals) Prove that this is what happened (exhibit evidence in documented records)
EFFECTIVENESS
Factors:
Commitment of Senior Management to monitor, controls, and improve quality. Organizations that implement an ISO system without this desire and commitment, often take the cheapest road to get a certificate on the wall and ignore problem areas uncovered in the audits. ISO system focuses on improving the customer experience.
ADVANTAGES
Create a more efficient, effective operation. Increase customer satisfaction and retention. Reduce audits, Reduce waste and increases productivity. Enhance marketing. Improve employee motivation, awareness, and morale. Promote international trade & Increases profit.
problems
Time consuming Documentation procedure.
While internationally recognized, most US consumers are not aware of ISO 9000 and it holds no relevance to them.
Competitive disadvantage. ISO itself advises that ISO 9001 can be implemented without certification, simply for the quality benefits that can be achieved.
Iso 14000
(a) minimize how their operations (processes, etc.) negatively affect the environment. (b) comply with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements, and
The ISO 14000 Series of Environmental Management Standards The ISO is a specialized international organizational standards bodies of whose members are 111 countries. All standards developed by ISO are voluntary. ISO 14000 is a series of international standards on environmental management. "ISO 14000" is the first international attempt to standardize environmental management practices around the world.
ISO 14000 will help integrate the environmental management systems of companies that trade with each other in all corners of the world.
CERTIFICATION
Once a business has fully developed and implemented their ISO 14001 compliant environmental management system, they can choose to apply for certification (also referred to as registration). Certification involves evaluation of the company's EMS system, including a comprehensive on-site audit, to determine whether it meets the ISO 14001 requirements (Martin 1998).
CONCLUSION
Environmental issues are not going away. National and international regulations and laws at all government levels are continually being created, revised and generally made more stringent. Compliance to these laws and regulations is often a full-time job for one or more personnel in each organization. Certification and registration is one of the most effective ways to provide objective evidence. Today, the choice is yours. Tomorrow, the choice may not be available. No matter what your position may be, it is a safe conclusion that every firm will benefit from learning about ISO 14000 and 9000. So the question should not be if you will start, but when you will start.
MiniCases
Rockwell Automation; Twinsburg, Ohio. The Twinsburg plant became one of the first registrants in the U.S. to ISO 14001. According the Roger Hartel, "certification sends a message to the company's stockholders, customers, and employees. Being an exemplary environmental citizen is absolutely of critical importance to all these populations and to international business as well." ISO 14000 and EMS have contributed to a continuing reduction of energy consumption and waste production. Recycling reduces material sent to landfills by about 150,000 pounds a year. Xerox Corporation : Site recycling programs, including the conversion of solid waste to useable energy through incineration, saved Xerox over $12 million in 1995. Xerox implemented a plastic recycling program. High grade plastic panels from returned Xerox products are collected, sorted, disassembled and ground for reprocessing. The plastic is then used to manufacture
