Authors Personal Life


Throughout Greenes life, he had numerous scandals with many women. He once compiled a list of the 47 prostitutes he could recall using in the 1920s and 1930s.

Personal Life
During his school time, he was badly bullied and he had made several attempts to suicide. He sat up one night trying to saw open his knee with a penknife. When that failed, he tried swallowing toxic substances, eye drops, hay fever drops, bleaching powder even deadly night shade leaves. When none of them killed him, he took 14 aspirins and plunged into the school swimming pool. His legs felt like lead but he did not drown.

Personal Life
All his life he sought out dangerous places and flirted with death, as though at war with himself. After several suicide attempts, Greene left school one day and wrote to his parents that he did not wish to return. This caused him to be sent to a therapist in London at age fifteen. His analyst, Kenneth Richmond, encouraged him to write and introduced him to his circle of literary friends which included the poet Walter de la Mare.

Personal Life
He was also an enthusiastic user of drugs and alcohol. He used to write two novels but none of it were successful. He separated from his wife in 1948 but they never divorced.
