Introduction
A clutch is a mechanism for transmitting rotation, which can be engaged and disengaged. Clutches are useful in devices that have two rotating shafts The clutch connects the two shafts so that they can either be locked together and spin at the same speed (engaged), or be decoupled and spin at different speeds (disengaged).

Single, dry, clutch friction disc. The splined hub is attached to the disc with springs to damp chatter.

Design
most are based on one or more friction discs, pressed tightly together or against a flywheel using springs. When engaging the clutch, the engine speed may need to be increased from idle. raising the engine speed too high while engaging the clutch will cause excessive clutch plate wear.

Kinds of clutch

Single plate & multi plate friction clutches.


Single Plate : is used almost exclusively in automobiles and trucks and has three main parts ((i) Driving members (ii) Driven members (iii)operating members ) Multi-plate: Type type of clutch is used almost exclusively in motorcycles.

Cone clutches Dog clutches Safety clutches. Overrunning clutch. Centrifugal clutch and semi-centrifugal clutch. Hydraulic clutch. Electromagnetic clutch.

The drive and driven shafts are connected to friction discs. These discs are pushed together to transmit torque.

The centrifugal clutch (Shoe/Rim) works on the same principle as a drum brake. Torque is transmitted across the shoe/drum interface.

The example shows an overrunning clutch used to disconnect the starter motor in an Internal Combustion engine.

A torque limiting clutch has a limit set to the amount of torque that it can transmit due to some construct within it. Almost no torque is transmitted once the limit is reached.

The fluid coupling is a type of "soft start" clutch that is often overlooked.

The magnetic particle, powder, or magnetic fluid clutch is a less common device.

It is capable of enduring long periods of high slip and can absorb shock and vibrations. At full load, they can be up to 99% efficient. Torque transmitted increases with decreasing slip.

Wet and dry clutches


A 'wet clutch' is immersed in a cooling lubricating fluid,
keeps the surfaces clean and gives smoother performance and longer life. tend to lose some energy to the liquid. Since the surfaces of a wet clutch can be slippery (as with a motorcycle clutch bathed in engine oil), stacking multiple clutch disks can compensate for slippage

A 'dry clutch', as the name implies, is not bathed in fluid.
