Question 3: What have you learnt from audience feedback?

Who is my audience and why is feedback important?

The feedback I received from my target audience was key for the production of my music video. It allowed me to view my project through their eyes and better understand what it is that they would like to see in a shirt film. It also enabled me to make the necessary improvements boosting its appeal to the audience. The ideal target audience I aimed for was of a male gender at university or working in the film or media industry. They would be interested in independent short and feature length films and attend film festivals, rather than just see the big Hollywood block busters in the cinema. They would also regularly use sites like Vimeo to view other amateur film makers for entertainment and inspiration. For this purpose I chose to host my final cut of Parallel on Vimeo over the much larger Youtube.

On a less specific scale the target audience for my movie would be those aged between 16-34 with a interest in film. I selected this age group as its when the younger generation tend to develop the interests that will stay with them for life, rather than earlier on when interests change rapidly. These people will be in the social groupings A, B and C1. They will also have an extensive knowledge and use of the internet making publicising and hosting my movie online to be an obvious choice. I chose a young cast for Parallel as this was something that my audience could relate to allowing for them to enjoy it on a higher level. I also dressed him in the same kind of clothing brands that people of this age would dress in e.g. wearing a suite from Topman in the successful life or a Superdry jacket in the unsuccessful.

What I have learnt from audience feedback

Audience feedback as drastically changed how I have created my film and for the better. Feedback such as some scenes lasted to long and interest was lost gave me space to improve and create a final production that I knew my audience would enjoy. Even research into my audience before production was key. This research gave me a key idea what they would like to see in the short film and be able to make an audience pleasing film that still represented my artistic desires as the writer, director and producer. I also used the opportunity of my audience being tech savvy to gain some insightful research and feedback through social networking. I posted on Facebook and gained a lot of valuable and positive feedback.
