Born in 1902 in The Salinas Valley which later became the location of many of his books and short stories
Both of his parents believed in exposing their children to culture, and a wide variety of novels and literature. At the age of nine, Steinbeck received a copy of Malory's Morte d'Arthur which proved to be one of the biggest influences in his literary career. He attended Stanford University where he majored in English, but never received a degree.
Steinbeck worked off and on in many different jobs including a laborer in a sugar factory, a laborer in mills, and a ranch hand. He also traveled throughout the Salinas Valley and studied marine life in Monterey Bay. He used many of his experiences for material in his later novels such as Of Mice and Men (1937) He referred to Of Mice and Men as a "play-novelette When John Steinbeck died in 1968, he was one of America's most popular novelist.
To show the pain and miseries of dreams that the farm laborers went through.
To show through past experiences that dreams are stepping stones to fulfill and dreams are just a form of encouragement unlikely to come true.
All characters represent some form of experiences that people went through. For example, Crooks represents the black people, Curley's wife represents the typical female in the times, and Curley represents those men that because of wealth had power but otherwise were just cold hearted useless men.
