Thank you for purchasing THE BUTCHER BAR BORED LOCK-PULLER from Search & Destroy Fire Training. We developed the Butcher Bar as an economical alternative to more expensive tools used for pulling residential and commercial-grade bored key-in-knob locks and dead-bolts. At a base price of $20, any firefighter can afford a serviceable throughthe-lock tool.
1 Historical inspiration
We took our inspiration from the very dawn of through-the-lock forcible entry, the Sunilla Tool, which was simply a modified nail-puller bar designed by an FDNY captain in the early 1960s. This tool was originally used to pull rim and mortise locks. Because of changes to rim and mortise lock cylinders over the years, its use became limited and other tools, like the K-Tool and Rex Bar were developed for both rim and mortise locks. So the Sunilla Tool and its homemade equivalent fell to the wayside.
2 Function
Commercial-grade key-in-knob and dead-bolt
The Butcher Bar does not replace tools used to pull rim and mortise locks.
Its primary use is for pulling bored locks.the types of locks found on most houses and apartments, and some commercial buildings: Key-in-Knob Locks and Tubular Dead-Bolts. Against these locks, the Butcher Bar is effective, lightweight, and extremely inexpensive.
3 bored locks
Bored locks are so-called because installation involves boring two holes in the door: a 2-1/8 hole in the door-face, and another 1 hole in the door-edge. Most residential and commercial bored lock-sets are held together by two screws. On residential locks, these will be visible on the inside only. On commercial locks, these will usually be covered by decorative plates.

6 Proper tool-set
Bear in mind that some higher-grade key-in-knob and dead-bolt sets have a small lip that fits into the 2-1/8 hole in the face of the door. This can occasionally complicate tool-set slightly. Once the lock-face is gapped, adjust the angle of the tool so that it is aimed to travel at a slight diagonal angle. This will allow it to slip between the lip and the door. This practice is not unlike that used in conventional prying when setting the halligan past the door-stop on an inward-swinging door.

7 plan B
Sometimes with dead-bolts, the screws are too meaty to be forced by a simple side-to-side motion. You just are not able to stress the screws enough because, although youve got great leverage, you dont get a lot of spread away from the door when rocking from sideto-side. In this instance, consider that first method as simply the gapping portion of your GAP-SET-FORCE technique. Having done so, you should now have a good gap established.the screws will now be stretched a bit, and the lock-face will be a little loose in its hole. From here, re-configure the placement of the tool: Remove the tool from behind the top of the lock-face and place it behind the bottomside of the lock-face, set behind the collar. Now, step to the side and push the bar down slightly to take up slack and pre-stress the screws. Lastly, with a bouncing motion, use your body weight and strength to push down on the bar, repeatedly if necessary. This will shock and break the screws or strip their threads This will offer less leverage, but more spread for these tough forces where you have a wide gap established already but dont have enough spread with the tool to finish off the screws.
8 plan C
When all else fails.GO CONVENTIONAL! No matter what anyone tells you, no single forcible entry method is fool-proof. I have had things go south trying to pull a lock, and had to revert to conventional pryingit happens to the best of em from time to time. Thats no failure on your part, you did the right thing in trying to do the business or home owner a solid by trying to keep the destruction to a minimumthe situation just didnt cooperate. For that reason, always make sure you have the Irons handy.
After the lock-face has been removed, insert the flat-end of a Key Tool or a flat-head screwdriver, turn the hub to retract the latch and open the door. Latch-Hub
