1995: Engineers the $19.5 billion sale of Cap Cities/ABC to Disney. Over the years, Berkshire earned a $2.5 billion profit on its Cap Cities/ABC investment. 1999: Berkshire has its worst year, with the share price down nearly 21%, even as most stock indexes soared. Buffett rejects pressure to jump into technology stocks and says hes happy with Berkshires holdings.
2000: The tech bubble bursts and Berkshire shares soar nearly 27% while the S&P 500 loses 9%. 2003: Harshly criticizes President George Bushs proposed tax cuts as an unfair break for the wealthy. Surprises longtime Buffett watchers by becoming a financial and economic advisor to California gubernatorial candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger. Buffett has long believed Schwarzenegger has the leadership needed to tackle Californias deep fiscal problems.
2004: In his annual letter to shareholders, he criticizes high pay for corporate executives and mutual fund directors who are not accountable to shareholders. Forbes magazine lists Buffett as the worlds second richest person, with a net worth of $42.9 billion. (Microsofts Bill Gates is the richest.)
