BEHAVIORAL MODEL

Definition
The Behavioral Model (a.k.a. Approach) focuses on observable and specific behavior. It emphasizes the learning of discrete items of information through practice and reinforcement, rote learning, and memorization. The Behavioral Approach is considered with observable indications of learning and what the observations could imply for teaching. Behaviorist view learning as a sequence of stimulus and response actions in the learner.

Direct Instruction Strategy

a fast-paced, well organized instructional strategy. a way of teaching basics skill and sequential material, in which lessons are highly goal orientated and learning environments are tightly structured by the teacher. utilizes teacher explanation and modeling, combined with student practice and feedback to teach concepts and skills.

Principles of Direct Instruction :

Emphasis on Practice & Repetition. Teach skills and concepts. Use prior knowledge. Give chunks of information approximately every 10 minutes. Check for Understanding (CFU) after each chunk of information is taught. Transfer STM (Short Term Memory) to LTM (Long Term Memory). Use of prior knowledge. Small, concrete and progressively sequenced tasks. Positive and Negative Reinforcement. Consistency in the use of reinforcement during the teaching learning process. Immediate, consistent and positive reinforcement increases the speed of learning. Once an item is learned, intermittent reinforcement will promote retention. Habits and other undesirable responses can be broken by removing the positive reinforcer connected with them. Reach over learning to get your student to the level of automatic learning.

Characteristics of Direct Instruction :

Direct Instruction is Teacher-Directed Instruction. Direct Instruction is whole-class delivery. Controlled Classroom practice. Teacher centered transmission of information from Teacher to Student. Constant monitoring to Check for Understanding (CFU). Direct Instruction is an effective instructional model when the teachers goals are: Provide Information, Teach Standard Procedures, Develop Stepby-Step skills Direct Instruction is rigorously developed, fast-paced and provides constant interaction between the teacher and the student Direct Instruction works because it provides rapid gains, gains that persist, gains that increase self esteem because students have real skills they can be proud of When used appropriately, Direct Instruction enables the teacher to communicate complex knowledge/information at the students level
