Healthy Community

Definition:
It is a social group determined by geographic boundaries and/or common values and interests. Its members know and interact with each other. It functions within a particular social structure and exhibits and creates norms, values and social institutions.

Classification of Communities:
Urban high density, a socially homogeneous population and a

complex structure, non-agricultural occupations; something different


from an area characterized by complex interpersonal social relations. In the social science literature, urban is used to refer to a quality of life that is typically found in cities (Hawley, 1972:8). An urban community is one in which a number of people are not engaged in the collection or production of food.

Rural usually small and the occupation of the people is usually farming, fishing and food gathering. It is peopled by simple folks characterized by primary group relation, well- knit and having a high degree of group feeling.

Rurban a combination of a rural and an urban community.

Characteristics of a Healthy Community


A healthy community prompts its members to have a high degree of awareness that we are community.

A healthy community uses its natural resources while taking steps to conserve them for future generations.

A healthy community openly recognizes the existence of subgroups and welcomes their participation in community affairs.

A healthy community is prepared to meet crises.

A healthy community has open channels of communication that allows information to flow among all sub-groups of its citizens and in all directions.

A healthy community seeks to make each of its systems resources available to all members of the community.

A healthy community has legitimate and effective ways to settle disputes and meet needs that arise within the community.

A healthy community encourages maximum citizen participation in decision-making.

COMPONENTS OF A COMMUNITY
The People this represents the core that makes up the community. Included in the community core is a study of the demographic characteristics of the population as well as the values, beliefs and history of the people.

Eight (8) subsystems of the community


Housing this subsystem includes the type and characteristics of housing facilitates in the community; availability of housing facilities; presence of housing laws/regulations governing the people. Education these include laws, regulations, facilities, activities affecting education; ratio of health educators to learners, distribution of educational facilities in the community including a look into who utilize these; presence of informal educational facilities and activities existing in the community. Fire and Safety Availability and accessibility of fire protection and safety services and facilities.

Politics and government existing political structure, decisionmaking process/ pattern, leadership styles observed, etc. Health health facilities and services/activities and its availability and accessibility; ratio of providers and clients availing of the services. Communication systems, types of forms of communication existing and how these influence community health. Economics occupation, types of economic activities engaged by the people. Recreation recreational activities and facilities including types of consumers, appropriateness of recreational activities to consumers, etc.
